The attractive capital and largest city of Laos, in Southeast Asia, is a far cry from many of the region’s other large cities. Quiet and relaxing, Vientiane has plenty to offer the tourist who wants to experience the culture of this part of the world without the masses.

Vientiane Tourist Attractions

Tourists expecting to find another Bangkok will be either sorely disappointed or overjoyed by what Vientiane has to offer! This sleepy city has a very laid back atmosphere, helped along by its location on the banks of the Mekong River. This is the kind of city where you can sit back, enjoy a Beerlao and relax!

Once you feel refreshed, you’ll find that Vientiane has a lot to offer despite its laidback attitude. The many temples and stupas are the main attractions of the city. Here are some of the highlights…

Pha That Luang

Known as the Golden Stupa the beautiful Pha That Luang is the national symbol of Laos. There is thought to have been a temple on this site since as early as the 3rd century, but it is known for sure that a Khmer temple was situated here in the 13th century and the Pha that Luang was built upon its ruins in the 16th century. The temple was however destroyed in 1828 by the Thai invasion and was not rebuilt again until 1900.

Other Temples and Wats

Vientiane is also home to many other temples, wats and stupas and though none are as ostentatious as Pha That Luang they are impressive and ornate in their own ways.

The Buddhist temple, Wat Si Muang is one such example, and this has ornate Buddha images covering it plus a Buddha statue outside. Wat Si Saket is a Buddhist wat that was built in 1818 on the orders of King Anouvong. This beautiful wat features a terrace and a five tiered roof and also houses a museum. The Haw Phra Kaew temple is no longer a working temple as it now houses a museum and shop, but this nice temple was built around 1565.

Buddha Park

15 miles (25km) from Vientiane is the Buddha Park. This is an area of parkland that features over 200 Buddhist and Hindu statues. These sometimes bazaar statues come in all shapes and sizes and highlights include the 40 metre high reclining Buddha!

Other Attractions in Vientiane

Amongst the other attractions in Vientiane is the Lao National Museum which shows the history of Laos and is located in a French colonial building that was once the French governor’s residence.
