Malaysia is a country in South East Asia, situated on two separate land masses. One, at the far southern tip of the Asian mainland and the other some distance away on the large island of Borneo, which it shares with Brunei and Indonesia.

Multiple airlines offer flights to Malaysia from the UK. The main international airport is at the capital, Kuala Lumpur (airport code: KUL), and airlines offer direct flights, as well as those with one connection en-route. Malaysia Airlines offers the one direct flight to Malaysia, leaving from London Heathrow and with a journey time of just over 12 hours. Other airlines offering flights from London Heathrow include Kuwait Airways, Lufthansa, SriLankan Airlines, Egyptair, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways International, United Airlines and Cathay Pacific, all of which have one stop. Alternatively Qatar Airways and Emirates offer flights to Malaysia from London Gatwick.

The Tourist Attractions of Malaysia

Malaysia is a diverse country which is able to offer something for tourists of all tastes – from cities, to beaches, to wildlife and scenic beauty.

Tropical Islands

Malaysia has long been a popular ‘tropical island’ destination, and of benefit is the fact that not all of the islands have been heavily developed. This means you can choose to stay somewhere more busy if you prefer a lively atmosphere, or somewhere quieter if you’re looking for a romantic tropical island getaway with hardly anyone around! The Perhentian Islands and Pangkor would be more suited for visitors seeking the latter, whilst somewhere like Langkawi is far more developed with its range of high class resorts.

As well as enjoying the beaches, the sand and the weather, Malaysia is a popular scuba diving location. Some of the best scuba diving can be found off Redang Island and Sipadan Island.

Kuala Lumpur

The largest city and capital of Malaysia is Kuala Lumpur, often known just by its initials – KL! Kuala Lumpur is situated on the west coast of Malaysia on the Asian mainland section of the country.

This is fast becoming one of the world’s great cities and has benefited from much development, including skyscrapers, top class hotels, shopping centres, and excellent restaurants. If you’ve always wanted to stay in a 5 star hotel but could never afford to do so, maybe you can do in Malaysia’s capital city as Kuala Lumpur is said to have the world’s cheapest 5 star hotels!

One of KL’s most popular and well-known landmarks are the Petronas Twin Towers. For a short while they were the tallest buildings in the world, though now they can lay claim to be the tallest twin buildings with the highest 2 storey bridge in the world – the famous Skybridge. The Skybridge is accessible to visitors, but if you’re looking for the best view over the city the KL Tower is actually a much better bet!

National Parks

Malaysia has a number of national parks which are attractive to visitors who are seeking the more natural side to this country. Each of the parks offers a slightly different experience, so you can visit them all or choose which one suits your tastes best.

Kinabalu National Park, for example, contains the highest mountain in South East Asia. This has become a very popular mountain to climb and those who want to can use the many marked trails.

Gunung Mulu National Park, on Borneo, also offers mountain trekking though many visitors come to see the caves and limestone karst formations, including the 10th longest cave in the world. Alternatively Kubah National Park is a good choice for seeing wildlife as well as enjoying the waterfalls and jungle trails.

When Should You Visit Malaysia?

With its near equatorial position, Malaysia experiences a tropical equatorial climate which is characterised by heat and rain! Two different monsoon seasons dump their contents on Malaysia – Borneo is affected between October and February, and between April and October the western part of Malaysia is affected by the south-west monsoon.
