Johor Bahru is a bustling Malaysian city, second only in size to Kuala Lumpur. It’s located in southern Malaysia and is the capital of the Johor province, and has a number of attractions for the tourist.

Flights to Johor Bahru

In Johor Bahru, the local airport is the Senai International Airport (airport code: JHB), accessible by taxi and public bus routes. The only one-stop flight to Johor Bahru from the UK is with Malaysia Airlines, and it makes a stopover connection in Kuala Lumpur. British Airways and Virgin Atlantic make 2 transfers in their flights to Johor Bahru, in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Sri Lankan Airlines will take you through Colombo and Kuala Lumpur instead.

Johor Bahru Tourist Attractions

In tune with the fairly diverse ethnic population of Johor Bahru, the city has quite a mix of architecture and cultures to enjoy. There are mainly Malay, Chinese and Indian ethnicities here, so you can get to see landmarks like the Old Chinese Temple, Hindu temples, and mosques, all in the same city.

Johor Bahru Old Chinese Temple

Locally known as just the Old Temple, this ornate Chinese temple is one of the oldest buildings in Johor Bahru. It was built by the first Chinese pioneers to come here, in the 19th century, but there are no official records that say precisely when it was built. Today it’s in the core of downtown Johor Bahru and looks somewhat out of place surrounded by modern day skyscrapers.

Johor Bahru Chinese Heritage Museum

Visitors interested in finding out more about the Chinese heritage of Johor Bahru can go on to visit the Chinese Heritage Museum. Displayed within a restored historic building, the museum shows the history and culture of the Chinese population in Johor Bahru through exhibits and artefacts.

Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque

Constructed under the rule of Sultan Abu Bakar, between 1892 and 1900, this mosque may not be what you would expect! The architecture is a mix of British colonial and Moorish, with some Malay influences too, so quite unique really. The mosque is open at limited times to visitors, though it’s said that non-Muslims cannot enter inside.

Istana Besar

Istana Besar, or the Grand Palace, was built in 1866 again by Sultan Abu Bakar. It is still used for certain events as the royal palace of the Sultante of Johor, and has a museum that is open to the public. The Royal Abu Bakar Museum presents various artefacts and royal heirlooms and has the history of the Johor royal family.

Temples in Johor Bahru

Visitors interested in religious buildings will find Johor Bahru has a good selection of different kinds. As well as the mosque (above) there are Hindu temples and Sikh temples, of varying ages. The Sri Raja Mariamman Hindu Temple is older, at 100 years old, and has just had a major renovation. A far newer Hindu temple is Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman which was opened in 1996. This temple has a lot of glass and granite and is one of Johor Bahru’s top tourist attractions.

When Should You Visit Johor Bahru?

There really isn’t a perfect time to visit Johor Bahru as the weather is hot and wet all year round. Rainfall is very high, so unavoidable, but November to January are considerably wetter than other months. The temperature hardly varies across the year, staying between an average high of 30 and 32C.
