Mongolia is not exactly a prime tourist destination, but it does attract many thousands of visitors who come here to see a different way of life and a vast, empty country. Situated in Central Asian, Mongolia is a landlocked country and has borders with China and Russia.

Flights to Mongolia

Although Mongolia has a number of airports across the country, all but the Chinggis Khaan International Airport (airport code: ULN) in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, are for domestic flights only. Flights to Mongolia from the UK will therefore arrive in Ulaanbaatar and will be indirect with one or two connections. MIAT-Mongolian Airlines, Air China and Aeroflot provide travellers with flights to Mongolia from the UK via one connection. Two stop flights to Mongolia are available with airlines including BMI, Lufthansa, British Airways, KLM, and Air France.

Mongolia Tourist Attractions

Mongolia isn’t exactly filled with what most people would consider to be tourist attractions, and though the country may be lacking in the luxuries that many travellers expect these days it is the raw and authentic experience that people who bother to visit Mongolia will be looking for. The nomadic lifestyle that the people of Mongolia have bee living for thousands of years still exists in great numbers today, even though Mongolia is becoming more developed in its cities and urban way of living.

Ulaanbaatar

Mongolia’s capital and largest city is Ulaanbaatar, often spelt Ulan Bator, though the two spellings seem quite interchangeable.

Being the location of the country’s only international airport, Ulaanbaatar is the main entry point for the majority of visitors to the country. This isn’t a particularly attractive city but it’s well worth spending a few days here before heading off to other parts of the country to experience the more urban way of life, which for many people in Mongolia is still a relatively new way of living.

The city does feature a number of museums and several interesting buildings. Buildings include the Natural History Museum and the National History Museum, the latter tells the story of Mongolia’s impressive history. The Bogd Kahn Museum is another worth visiting as it’s situated within the winter palace of the last king of Mongolia.

Hovd

Visitors who are more interested in seeing a city with an ancient past should travel to Hovd. Situated in north western Mongolia Hovd features such attractions as ancient petroglyphs on the mountain just outside the city, plus cave paintings thought to be around 15,000 years old. Inside the city itself the museum displays a number of interesting artefacts.

Uvs Nuur

More ancient history can be experienced in the Uvs Nuur area to the north of Hovd. Mongolia’s largest lake, Lake Uvs, is here, sitting at the end of the huge Uvs Nuur Basin. Around 40,000 archaeological sites from ancient cultures have been discovered in the basin and hence the area has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

When Should You Visit Mongolia?

The mid continental position of Mongolia means the country has extremes of weather throughout the year. Hot summers and very cold winters are the norm, and despite cold winter temperatures Mongolia is now attracting tourists to its new year festivals. Between November and March the average temperatures are constantly below freezing and the coldest month, January, has an average low of -30C (-22F). In the summer it’s a different story with highs of 33C in the capital, and 38C in the southern Gobi Desert.
