Known as either Ulaanbaatar or Ulan Bator this is the capital and largest city in Mongolia, in Central Asia. Situated in the north central part of the country Ulaanbaatar sits at an elevation of 1,310 metres (4,300 feet) even though it is within a valley. In many ways this is the heart of the country and serves as the main entry point for most international visitors.
Flights to Ulaanbaatar
Mongolia’s only international airport is situated within Ulaanbaatar. Flights to Ulaanbaatar will arrive at the Chinggis Khaan International Airport (airport code: ULN), 11 miles (18km) southwest of the city. From the UK flights to Ulaanbaatar are available with several airlines all requiring either one or two stops. One stop flights can be found with Aeroflot, MIAT-Mongolian Airlines and Air China, whilst BMI, British Airways, Lufthansa, Air France and KLM provide two stop flights to Ulaanbaatar from the UK.
Ulaanbaatar Tourist Attractions
Though many tourists are attracted to visit Mongolia to see the vast emptiness and nomadic way of life, the country still has its big cities, of which Ulaanbaatar is one. As the main entry point for international travellers into Mongolia, most visitors will get to see a certain amount of the city whether you want to or not, and it’s actually worth spending some time here as there are several attractions worth visiting. You probably wouldn’t want to spend your entire holiday in Ulaanbaatar but several days visit is certainly recommended.
Buildings of Interest in Ulaanbaatar
Ulaanbaatar is not a city you would visit for amazing architecture but if you know where to look there are some attractive buildings in and outside the city.
The city’s main working monastery, Gandan Khiid Monastery, is one such place, as is the Choijin Lama Monastery. This was built early in the 20th century but has since been turned into a museum.
Museums in Ulaanbaatar
In addition to the above museum several others recommended in the city include the Natural History Museum and the National History Museum. If you’re looking for a museum more specific to Ulaanbaatar and Mongolia then the National History Museum would be your best bet as this tells the history of the country. Also the Bogd Kahn Museum should be visited. This is set within what was formerly the winter palace of the last king of Mongolia, and the palace is probably the city’s most beautiful and impressive piece of architecture.
Naadam Festival
The Nadaam Festival is the largest annual festival in Mongolia and if you’re visiting Ulaanbaatar during July you should try to experience this popular event. A lot of events happen during the Naadam Festival but the highlights include traditional sports such as archery, wrestling and horse riding.
Zaisan Memorial
Sitting on top of a hill overlooking Ulaanbaatar is the Zaisan Memorial which was built to remember the Soviet soldiers killed during World War 2. Whether you’re particularly interested in the memorial itself, this is a good place to get a panorama of Ulaanbaatar.
When Should You Visit Ulaanbaatar?
Ulaanbaatar has the grand title of being the coldest capital city in the world! The continental climate means that the city has long, cold winters and short but warm summers. The average high temperature in July is a pleasant 24C (75F), whilst the average high in January is a frigid -16C (3F).
