Situated at an altitude of 2,800 metres is the village of Jomsom in Nepal. This small village does not offer much in the way of tourist attractions, but it’s a popular gateway for trekking, helped by the fact that it has its own airport for easy access.

Flights to Jomsom

The Jomsom Airport (airport code: JMP) has the dubious honour of being one of the most dangerous airfields in the world, due to the mountainous terrain of the approach. International flights do not service the Jomsom airport, and most travellers prefer to fly into the Tribhuvan International Airport (code: KTM) in Kathmandu instead. Smaller charter flights to Jomson can be arranged between the two cities. A flight to Jomsom can be booked with Qatar Airways to Kathmandu, with a transfer in Doha. Two-stop routes are available with Lufthansa travelling through Munich and then Delhi. Several different airlines then offer onward flights to Jomsom from Kathmandu, including Agni Air, Sita Air, Gorkha Airlines, Royal Nepal, and Yeti Airlines.

Jomsom Tourist Attractions

As mentioned above Jomsom isn’t exactly somewhere you would come to stay for a holiday as there are no tourist attractions as such here in the village, but because of the airport and easy access it is a great place to come to start off on several treks of Nepal.

Jomsom is a typical Nepalese village where people go about their lives supplemented by the many tourists who pass through the village on a regular basis. There are several popular treks that can be started or ended here in Jomsom, including along the Kali Gandaki River valley, and the Jomsom to Muktinath Trek, both of which are part of the famous Annapurna Circuit.

Although small, Jomsom is well geared to the tourists with the provision of a number of hotels, most of which will have some sort of restaurant attached to them so you shouldn’t have trouble finding somewhere to sleep and eat. The menus at these hotels are said to usually be very comprehensive too, so you can fill up on a good meal before setting off on your trek.

Jomsom also has a number of shops where you can buy items that you might be needing on your trek, as well as local handicrafts you can buy for yourself or for friends and family, provided you’re at the end of your trek!

The Kali Gandaki River, which Jomsom straddles, offers a great variety of scenery for those hiking along this huge river gorge. At some points it is said to form the deepest ravine in the world, and is of course framed between mountain ranges; the Annapurna on one side, and the Dhaulagiri on the other. During the winter the river bed is dry, but come monsoon time it’s flowing rapidly with rain and snow melt. The landscape includes forests to deserts and it’s a cultural treat too with mixtures of both Tibetan and Hindu Buddhism to experience along the way.

When Should You Visit Jomsom?

Being located at an elevation of 2,800 metres the climate in Jomsom is obviously cooler than towns at a lower altitude, and it’s situated within a climatic cold zone. During the winter temperatures are cold but Jomsom is quite a dry place, creating a cold semi-desert environment.
