Lukla is just a small town but for anyone starting a trek to the Himalayas this is often their starting point. Lukla is located in the Khumbu region in the east of Nepal at an altitude of 2,860 metres (9,380 feet).

Flights to Lukla

The small Tenzing-Hillary Airport (airport code: LUA) only handles flights to Lukla from Kathmandu, so you can't really book a flight to Lukla directly from London. Kathmandu's airport is the Tribhuvan International Airport (code: KTM) and has service from many airlines. You can get a charter flight to Lukla with Yeti Airlines or Nepal Airlines. Virgin Atlantic and British Airways both have flights to Kathmandu with a transfer stop in Delhi. Gulf Air also stops once, but in Bahrain.

Lukla Tourist Attractions

Lukla is a popular destination but not because of its own attractions. Basically Lukla is frequently visited because it’s a popular gateway to the Himalayas, and this is because it’s one of the few places in the region that actually has an airport. There are some places to stay and a number of shops, but it’s not somewhere you’d actually come to stay for any more than a night or two.

The flight from Kathmandu is only about half an hour but Lukla is a world away from the city’s busy streets! The landing is also not for the faint hearted as the airport has one of the steepest runways in the world with a steep drop to the valley below if it’s over-shot! Be aware that there will be flight cancellations if the weather is bad, and that overbooking the flights is quite common.

Once you arrive in Lukla you’ll want to get acclimatised to the high elevation by staying here a night or two then perhaps moving on. The majority of trekkers will take the two day trek to Namche Bazaar, the real gateway into the high Himalayas, where there are also places to stay and several shops. If you can’t find whatever you need in Lukla then you’ll probably be able to find it in Namche Bazaar.

The village of Namche Bazaar is the location for the headquarters and visitors centre of the Sagarmatha National Park which contains some of the Himalayas and the southern half of Mount Everest. The park was established in 1976 and just three years later it became one of the earliest destinations to be inscribed onto UNESCO’s World Heritage Site list. The southern entrance into Sagarmatha National Park is about a day’s hike from Lukla and if you choose to hike across the national park you have the chance to pass through four different climatic zones and see many different types and flora and fauna.

When Should You Visit Lukla?

For the best trekking weather you’ll want to visit Lukla between the beginning of March and the middle of May, and from the beginning of September until the middle of November. You can trek at other times of the year too, but the conditions are not as good. Winters are obviously very cold and snowy and some lodges will be closed, while summer are wet and you can lose out on views due to cloud over.
