With the Pakistani Government so keen to promote the great cultural heritage of this Asian country there’s no doubt that Pakistan offers a variety of different attractions, from culture to spectacular scenery.
Cultural Attractions of Pakistan
Visitors interested in history and culture will find several top attractions in Pakistan, some of which have been protected as UNESCO World Heritage Sites because of their importance. Ruins of ancient civilisations can be found around the country, but the two major sites are Mohenjo-daro and Taxila. The former means ‘Mound of the Dead’ and was built around 2600 BC. It was one of the first cities in the world and was built by the Indus then abandoned around 1700 BC. The city wasn’t discovered again until only the 1920’s. Mohenjo-daro is situated within the Sindh province in southern Pakistan, whilst Taxila is situated a little north of the country’s capital, Islamabad, making this a very accessible site.
Cities in Pakistan
Pakistan’s second largest modern city is Lahore: the City of the Mughals. This is adorned with beautiful historic architecture and contains some of the country’s best known attractions such as Lahore Fort, the Badshahi Mosque and the Pakistani equivalent of the Eiffel Tower, Minar-e-Pakistan!
The capital of Pakistan is Islamabad, a city that’s actually best known for being quiet and peaceful. This is a relatively new city and because its construction was planned, streets and open spaces have been well thought out making this an attractive place to visit. Shopping, entertainment and nightlife facilities are being opened up all the time, so Islamabad is becoming a livelier city!
Karachi is an older city and has grown to become the largest in the country. There’s a great variety of attractions here making this a popular base for visitors to Pakistan. Attractions include impressive colonial architecture, museums, beaches, waterfronts and the port, plus amusement parks which you might not expect to find here!
Pakistan’s Scenery
The most striking feature of Pakistan is without doubt K2. The second highest mountain in the world, K2 is situated in the Himalayas and is very popular with trekkers and mountain climbers, as are other peaks of the Himalayas.
Also in this part of the country is the Hunza Valley, renowned for being very beautiful. The journey to here via the Karakoram Highway is one of the world’s ‘must dos’ so is well worth the trip if you’re coming to Pakistan.
When Should You Visit Pakistan?
Pakistan is a sizeable country and the fact that it spans north a considerable distance means the climate can be very different from one end to the next. In general, and particularly in the south, the climate is hot and dry though it can be heavily impacted by the unpredictable late summer monsoon rains. The centre has a more continental climate – very hot in the summer but very cold in winter, whilst parts of the northwest are more temperate, and in the far north, arctic!
