Karachi is the largest city in Pakistan as well as the country’s financial centre and main seaport. It’s actually one of the world’s largest cities and has expanded considerably over the past few decades. The coastal location means that Karachi has a surprising number of beaches, while in the city there are numerous landmarks and museums to visit.

Flights to Karachi

The largest airport in Pakistan is in Karachi, and it is the Jinnah International Airport (airport code: KHI). It's a very busy airport that handles 35 airlines and 10 million passengers a year, so expect a little congestion when you take a flight to Karachi. When travelling from London, all flights to Karachi will have just 1 connecting stop. British Midland and Gulf Air both stop in Bahrain, and Turkish Airlines transfers in Istanbul. Another choice is Etihad Airways for a flight to Karachi that connects in Abu Dhabi.

Karachi Tourist Attractions

While Karachi is a bustling metropolis it still has quite an appeal as a tourist destination. The city may not have the famous sights that Lahore does for example, but its combination of beaches, history, and culture provide a good many things for the visiting tourist to see and do.

Karachi’s Beaches

Clifton Beach was formerly one of the most famous and visited of the Karachi beaches though an oil spill in 2003 changed this. Karachi still has plenty of other beaches to enjoy though, such as French Beach on the outskirts of the city, reputed to be the most beautiful in Karachi. Beach Park is a popular gathering place, and next to this is Karachi’s most famous park, Bagh-e-Ibn-e-Qasim with its pier, historic amusement park, and more.

National Museum of Pakistan

Karachi has many museums but if you only want to visit one or two then the National Museum of Pakistan should be at the top of your list. Focusing on the country’s cultural history this museum features plenty of Islamic art, archaeological findings and historical documents such as the Quran.

Mohatta Palace

Another popular museum is Mohatta Palace. This former palace is worth visiting just to see the building if nothing else. Built in 1927 this is a beautiful building constructed of pink Jodhpur stone and is one of the most attractive buildings in Karachi.

Colonial Buildings of Karachi

As well as the palaces and the modern day skyscrapers Karachi has a good collection of colonial buildings. The imposing Frere Hall is one of them, dating from the days of the British Raj, and there’s the equally imposing Empress Market built in 1889. This remains one of Karachi’s main shopping areas with up to 280 shops and stalls selling their wares.

Shopping in Karachi

Speaking of shopping, Karachi is rated as a great city to go shopping in as a recent survey found it be the second cheapest city in the world! You can shop in the traditional Empress Market, or opt for one of the more modern shopping malls, many of which are situated within the Clifton area of Karachi. There are many internationally recognised names as well as shops selling Pakistan’s top brands.

When Should You Visit Karachi?

Karachi has a warm and quite arid climate with average high temperatures remaining at 25C (77F) and above throughout the year. This makes deciding when to visit Karachi a tough decision as you could come at any time of the year! July and August however, is best avoided being monsoon season, otherwise you may want to avoid the high temperatures of May and June when average highs are 34C (93F).
