Lahore is Pakistan’s second largest city and a top tourist destination best known for its wonderful architecture and cultural history, and its links as a Mughal city, giving it the nickname ‘Garden of the Mughals’.

Flights to Lahore

The main airport hub for flights to Lahore is the Allama Iqbal International Airport (airport code: LHE), about a half hour drive outside of the city, to which taxis and shuttles are readily available. When travelling from London, there are no direct flights to Lahore as all airlines have either 1 or 2 connections. Both British Midland and Etihad Airways have a transfer in Abu Dhabi. KLM makes an extra stop and flies through Amsterdam and then Abu Dhabi.

Lahore Tourist Attractions

Lahore is an ancient city and offers many historical and culturally important sights for visitors. Although this is a large city with a high population it still has many beautiful green spaces and gardens and manages to retain a great appeal, making this a popular tourist destination. The city’s major sites include the following…

The Walled City of Lahore

The Walled City of Lahore is also known more simply as the Old City and contains the older parts of Lahore all within a section that was fortified by the building of a wall during the Mughal reign. Within the walled city are several of Lahore’s top attractions.

The Lahore Fort

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is probably Lahore’s most famous attraction, and one of the most famous in the whole of Pakistan. This large fort was built by the Mughals initially during the reign of emperor Akbar between 1556 and 1605 but has been added to and changed numerous times over the following hundreds of years. Altogether, this is a very impressive place.

The Shalimar Gardens

Listed jointly with Lahore Fort as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is the Shalimar Gardens. These well maintained and beautifully designed gardens feature terraces, water features and more, and are especially known for their intricate fretwork.

Minar-e-Pakistan

The Eiffel Tower of Pakistan may not be quite as impressive as the original but it’s a major sight in Lahore and is situated within a park on the site at which the creation of a separate state for Muslims was recognised in 1940.

The Badshahi Mosque

The final major attraction to visit within Lahore’s Walled City is the Badshahi Mosque. This is the second largest mosque in the country, capable of holding 55,000 worshippers, and was constructed in 1673 by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.

The Gates of Lahore

The Walled City had as many as 13 gates, but today only 6 of these have survived. It’s worth taking the time to visit each one of the remaining 6 as they each have different architectural styles. The six surviving ones are Bhati Gate, Delhi Gate, Kashmiri Gate, Lohari Gate, Roshnai Gate, and Shairanwala Gate.

When Should You Visit Lahore?

Lahore is a city that can suffer some very extreme highs of temperature particularly in May, June and July. This is just around the time of the monsoon season that runs from July to September. The rest of the year the temperatures cool down and there is significantly less rainfall. January is the coolest month but even then the average high is still a pleasant 20C.
