Bacolod is a major city on the Philippine island of Negros Occidental. Its nickname is the "City of Smiles" because it is known for its friendly population.

Flights to Bacolod

The Bacolod-Silay Airport (airport code: BCD) doesn’t cater to any international flights to Bacolod, so you will have to arrange to fly to Manila instead. From the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (code: MNL), you can get a flight to Bacolod with Cebu Pacific, Airphil Express or Philippine Airlines. With that in mind, you can get a flight to Manila with Air New Zealand that connects in Hong Kong, or with Malaysia Airlines with a stop in Kuala Lumpur. KLM make their connection in Amsterdam.

Bacolod Tourist Attractions

San Sebastian Cathedral

The present-day San Sebastian Cathedral was built in the late 1800s, and constructed out of coral. The facade of the church has unfortunately been redone in cement but the building is still impressive with its two towers.

Negros Museum

Located a few blocks to the south-west of San Sebastian Cathedral is the Negros Museum which has a collection of artefacts from the island's sugar industry period. The art and culture of the island is on display, and the toy exhibit is popular with younger visitors. The museum is on Gatuslao Street, and there is a small entry fee for adults.

Negros Forest and Ecological Foundation

The animal park in the city is just one aspect of the NFEFI's projects to save the forests of Negros. You can learn more about their movement and see a small zoo with leopard cats, spotted deer, pigeons and other local endangered species.

Mt. Kanlaon National Park

Half an hour's drive from Bacolod is the Mount Kanlaon National Park, where you can go hiking on more than 40 kilometres of trails up and down this volcanic mountain. There are great views from the highest point on the island, and native wildlife is a common sight too. The volcano is active, and you can often see smoke billowing from the summit.

Patag Valley

Another local area that is ideal for walking and hiking in the wilderness is Patag Valley. A little farther away from Bacolod than Mount Kanlaon, the Patag Valley lies between Mount Silay and Mount Marapara and has trails through the local forests. Deer and many species of birds are commonly found in the area so look out for them on your travels.

Talisay Ruins

Just outside of Bacolod is the remains of an old sugar plantation in Talisay. The many balustrades and walls are still standing, and it's just a beautiful location to walk around and take photos. The moss-covered fountain is a particularly nice spot.

When Should You Visit Bacolod?

Temperatures are fairly steady in Bacolod, hovering around 30C (86F) for most of the year. It will get 2 or 3 degrees warmer during March, April and May though. You may want to schedule your trip to avoid the rainiest parts of the year. For drier weather, visit between January and April. May and December are still comfortable but July and August are very wet.
