Also known as Santo Domingo de Basco, Basco is a municipality of the Batanes Province in the far north of the Philippines. It’s situated on the second largest island of the Batanes, Batan Island, and although Basco is the capital it’s really a fairly small place.

Flights to Basco

The Basco Airport (airport code: BSO) only has limited service for flights to Basco, so you should arrive in Manila instead. From the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (code: MNL), you can get a local flight to Basco with South East Asian Airlines. Travelling from the UK you can get to Manila on a flight with Malaysia Airlines that connects in Kuala Lumpur, or with Air New Zealand for a stopover in Hong Kong. Most flights are around 15 hours long, but can be as long as 20.

Basco Tourist Attractions

As destinations in the Philippines go, Basco isn’t top of the tourist hot spots, but because it has an airport it’s an easier place to get to than other remote Filipino towns and islands. This means Basco will appeal to tourists who want ease of access yet wish to enjoy somewhere that’s quieter, and not heaving with other tourists.

There are some lovely accommodation options in Basco after all. So perhaps this would make a great honeymoon getaway destination. These include a resort-style property with cottages, and a number of privately run bed and breakfasts, and lodges. Often the accommodation is on the more basic side, but the Filipino hospitality and the wonderful views more than make up for this. Imagine enjoying breakfast or dinner in a restaurant overlooking the ocean where all you can hear is the sound of the waves crashing on the shoreline! This is the how most tourists describe their experience of staying in Basco!

The island itself is beautiful and Basco is a good place from which to base yourself for exploring. You can do this on your own, or let your host make arrangements for guided tours. Guided tours can be on the expensive side, as are most goods and services on Basco, but they are well worth the expense as you benefit from a local guide who knows all the absolutely amazing places to show you.

One of the major landmarks is Basco Lighthouse. Set up on a green hillside overlooking the ocean this is a simply beautiful spot that you can only reach by hiking three quarters of a mile from Basco. You may think this is a historical structure when in fact the lighthouse was completed in 2003. Prior to World War 2 there was a telegraph station here but it was destroyed by Japanese bombings. Some of the buildings did survive from this era and they have now been converted into visitor services such as a café.

The big appeal for tourists with Basco Lighthouse is the viewing deck. The lighthouse stands 6 storeys high, with the sixth being the location of the light. The fifth floor has a viewing deck and from here you can see the whole of Batan Island including Basco, and sometimes on a clear day you can also see neighbouring Sabtang Island.

When Should You Visit Basco?

Basco’s latitude means the town has warm to hot weather year round but it’s also wet. March and April are by far the driest months of the year (though they still have heavy rainfall by most standards!) and they’re hot but not overly so temperatures make this a good time to visit. The average high then is between 27.6 and 29.6C.
