Situated within the Philippines, in the administrative region of Caraga, is the city of Butuan. Butuan is an historic city with culture and historical attractions to visit as well as the scenery of the nearby Mount Mayapay.

Flights to Butuan

The Bancasi Airport (airport code: BXU) only handles domestic flights to Butuan, not international ones. So from the UK you will have to fly to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (code: MNL) in Manila, and get a local flight to Butuan with Philippines Air. You can fly with Malaysia Airlines and have one connection in Kuala Lumpur, or with Qatar Airways and transfer in Doha. British Airways also has a 1-stop flight that goes through Hong Kong.

Butuan Tourist Attractions

Butuan Regional Museum

A good place to start your visit to Butuan is at the Regional Museum. Here you can find out more about the city and the surrounding region through its culture and history. Exhibits are displayed within two galleries, one is the Archaeological Hall and the other is the Ethnological Hall, and items include finds from archaeological digs, plus potteries, woodcrafts, stone crafts and more.

Balangay Shrine Museum

The Balangay was the first ever wooden boat to be excavated in the Philippines. Similar to a canoe in shape, the Balangay was used to trade around the waters of the Philippines and beyond, and were used by the local people of Butuan. Nine of these boats have been discovered though not all of them have been excavated as they will remain best preserved in the water in which they sit. The oldest excavated one was found to date back to 320AD.

Each year in Butuan there is a festival to celebrate the arrival of the early migrants to the Philippines and re-creations of the Balangay boats are used.

Asian Century Museum

Another museum in Butuan is the Asian Century Museum. This newer museum focuses on Asian culture and history and has a number of written exhibits and artefacts on display.

Mount Mayapay

On the outskirts of Butuan is Mount Malapay. This isn’t a really high mountain, at 675 metres, but has a plateau that’s perfect for mountain hikes and enjoying the views over Butuan and the surrounding coastline and countryside.

Banza Church Ruins

The Banza Church was once of the most beautiful churches in this region of the Philippines, though it hasn’t stood for hundreds of years. Built in 1625 by Recollect Friars, it was burnt to the ground by pirates in 1753. The church was never rebuilt, but the bell tower still stands today.

When Should You Visit Butuan?

Be prepared for rainfall whenever you visit Butuan as this city has no dry season! You could avoid the months of November to January though, as this really is the wettest time of year, so not a pleasant time for visiting. Between July and October you’ll be visiting in typhoon season, so this also is not a good time to visit, leaving February to June. On average May is the hottest month, with daily averages around 28C.
