Located on Cebu Island in the Philippines is Cebu City, the second largest city in the Philippines and one of the country’s top tourist destinations. It’s the oldest city in the country yet it has plenty of modern development, giving Cebu City a mix of old and new.

Flights to Cebu

The main airport in Cebu is the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (airport code: CEB), located about a half hour drive away, in the city of Lapu-Lapu. Several airlines have flights to Cebu from the UK, though none are non-stop. Cathay Pacific Airlines and British Airways have routes with 1 transfer, which is in Hong Kong. For a longer flight involving 2 connections, you can get a flight to Cebu with Virgin Atlantic and transfer in Shanghai and Hong Kong, or choose a flight to Cebu with Lufthansa that stops in Munich and Hong Kong.

Cebu Tourist Attractions

Cebu is an old city that was founded by the Spanish in 1565 and it has still retained a variety of its old buildings that are popular tourist attractions today. Alongside these, run down buildings have been demolished and Cebu is rapidly becoming a modern city that features striking skyscrapers. This makes it an interesting city to visit.

Basilica Minore del Santo Nino

Dating from the same year as Cebu was established is the Basilica of Santo Nino, making this the oldest church in Cebu and in fact the whole of the Philippines. It was consecrated in 1565 though the actual church building you see here today dates from 1739. It’s an attractive church from the outside, and there’s a museum here that traces the history of the church and Christianity in Cebu.

Magellan’s Cross

Magellan’s Cross is one of the symbols of Cebu and it’s very much a part of the city’s history. The cross is said to have been planted here by the Portuguese and Spanish explorers in 1521 when they first arrived in Cebu, following orders of Ferdinand Magellan. It is housed within a small octagonal chapel that stands next door to the Basilica. The ceiling of the chapel is highly decorated.

Fort San Pedro

Another Spanish colonial building is Fort San Pedro. This triangular building dates originally from 1565, though there have been major changes to the fort over the following couple of hundred years and then again in the late 1800s when it underwent major renovations. There’s a small museum at Fort San Pedro whose main focus is on a sunken galleon called the San Diego from Mexico.

Cebu Taoist Temple

Though many of the top landmarks in Cebu relate to the Spanish colonisation of Cebu there’s one major landmark that was built by a significant Chinese population, and it’s the Cebu Taoist Temple. Built in 1972 this beautiful temple stands on a hill in the outskirts of the city allowing some wonderful city views.

Shopping in Cebu

Cebu is a popular place for tourists to go shopping and you ca choose from modern shopping malls or the more traditional markets. Carbon Market is a traditional farmer’s market, the oldest and largest in Cebu. It’s a major tourist attraction even if you’re not planning to buy anything from the various goods that are sold here. This includes food, clothing, souvenirs, handicrafts and gifts.

When Should You Visit Cebu?

The tropical climate of the Philippines means that Cebu City is hot and humid throughout the year. There are three seasons though – the hot season from March to May when temperatures peak to the mid to high 30’s C; the rainy season from June to November; and the cold season from Dece, ber to February. July to October has the highest risk of typhoons so should be avoided.
