Singapore is a small country at the very tip of the huge piece of land that includes China, Malaysia, and Hong Kong etc. Yet it is a unique destination in its own right. Singapore is known for its high standard of living and strict rules that keep it that way. For example, people are banned from chewing gum, because of the litter it causes. Don’t expect people to be unfriendly though; they are generous and approachable people. Singapore is cosmopolitan and is great for eating out and shopping but also has it fair share of beaches. It is a neighbour to Malaysia, which generally has an earthier feel, so visiting both countries at the same time is a good idea.

Flights

Flying to Singapore direct is fairly easy from the UK; major British Airports such as Heathrow and Manchester have direct flights with Singapore Airlines, otherwise Virgin, Cathay Pacific etc. has flights too. Some airlines will require a quick change, although this can also work out cheaper for you. Singapore is a very safe country and you should have no issues entering with a British Passport that is valid. Be aware of what you are bringing into the country; there have been known cases of confiscated chewing gum, for example, but this is generally at the customs discretion.

Climate

Singapore is very hot and very humid; you will sense it as soon as you walk out of the air conditioned airport! In the summer, the weather is around 30 degrees Celsius or higher; November to January is the Monsoon period where there will be short but heavy rainfalls. Humidity is usually about 75% which means you may want to make sure your hotel room has air conditioning unless you can sleep under humid conditions, but it is worth remembering it is a level of humidity that is never experienced in the UK.

What to do

There is a beach resort called Sentosa in Singapore which you can get to by car. This is a resort with its own restaurants, beaches and shops. You can also see the giant statue of the Merlion- half mermaid, half lion which represents the country. Singapore like a lot of Asian countries is also known for its fine tailoring; go to Orchard Road where they will measure you up and make you a new outfit within 24 hours for a fraction of UK prices.

There is also the famous Raffles Hotel in Singapore. This was where the Singapore Sling was invented; here you can go to the Long Bar and order the drink. Singapore, like many South Asia countries also has amazing food and unusual first; try some lychees or Sharon fruit, or even a durian; known as one of the smelliest foods you can eat! You are actually banned form eating it in many public locations so look out for the signs.

When in the city, take a ride on a rickshaw; you can usually haggle the price but remember to pay a fair price.
