Formerly spelled Pusan, but now more commonly spelt as Busan, this city is the second largest in South Korea, after Seoul. Busan is also the largest port city in the country and it’s located in the south east.

Flights to Busan

The airport in Busan is the Gimhae Airport (airport code: PUS) and is quite small, handling only a few international flights. There are shuttles, taxis and public bus service into the city from the airport. When travelling from London, there are only a few flights to Busan available. Lufthansa stops once in Munich, and you can travel through Tokyo if you fly with British Airways or Virgin Atlantic. There is one 2-stop flight to Busan with China Southern Airlines. It transfers in Amsterdam and Shanghai.

Busan Tourist Attractions

Busan is a wealthy city that’s full of new construction that includes luxurious condos and skyscrapers. It’s home to many ‘large’ things: Busan is the largest port city in South Korea, and the fifth largest in the world; the world’s largest department store is here in Busan, and it will soon be home to the world’s third largest skyscraper. And although there are many modern conveniences and architecture, Busan has still retained some of the more traditional side of its culture and history, making a visit here an interesting and rewarding experience.

Beomosa Temple

Pusan has a good number of temples and other religious buildings, of which Beomosa Temple is the most notable. The temple complex is just a few miles outside of the city centre, but its mountainside location makes it feel a million miles away from this huge city. There’s a natural peace and serenity here, which is probably why the location was chosen for the temple in the first place.

The temple was originally built in the year 678 and was added to over the centuries to a point where there were over 1,000 monks residing here, within over 360 rooms. This temple was burnt to the ground in 1592 though and after another rebuild and subsequent fire it was rebuilt again in 1613. There is still plenty of beautiful and historical architecture to see here though.

Busan Tower

A far more modern addition to Busan is the Busan Tower. Some will argue that this is just a tourist trap, but there’s no denying that you can get some lovely views from this tower that stands 118 metres high and was built in 1973.

Shingsegae Centum City

Another modern attraction for Busan is the world’s largest department store, Shingsegae Centum City. It surpassed Macys in New York as the largest department store in 2009.

Busan’s Beaches

Busan may be a large and busy city but it is on the coast and is actually renowned within South Korea at least, for its great beaches. There are seven beaches, and three hot springs, so plenty to choose from, as well as numerous luxury hotels and resort style accommodation. It’s a summer hotspot for Koreans, and if you’re visiting for the culture you’ll want to spend some time of these great beaches too.

When Should You Visit Busan?

Busan is a wet city, but oddly enough it’s very sunny too! Summers are hottest, but this is also the rainiest time of year so for sightseeing a visit in October would be good – average highs then are 22.5C. There’s less rainfall in the winter but temperatures are cool in comparison – an average high of 7.8C in January.
