Formerly anglicized as Chinju, the city of Jinju is in South Korea and is situated in the south of the country on the Nam River. This small city has an attractive setting and offers visitors both cultural and historical attractions.

Flights to Jinju

The Sacheon Airport (airport code: HIN) is located 12.5 miles (20km) from the city but it only handles local flights to Jinju, not international. To complicate matters the only flights to Jinju are from Seoul’s Gimpo Airport (code: GMP), but this is not the main international airport in Seoul. This means you would have to catch a flight to Seoul Incheon International Airport first, flying with Virgin Atlantic from the UK, via Shanghai, then transfer to the Gimpo Airport and get a local flight to Jinju with either Asiana Airlines or Korean Air.

Jinju Tourist Attractions

If the prospect of a complicated journey to Jinju has not already put you off visiting this city you’ll enjoy a pleasant visit with the chance to see a number of sights. Being a smaller city some visitors might argue that the more complicated flight to Jinju is worth it because you get to experience more of the local culture here than you would do in larger cities, so you should weigh up the pros and cons.

Jinju Fortress

Most of the things to see in Jinju are within the castle, or fortress that stands on the north bank of the Nam River. The fortress and grounds is of course an historical attraction but its riverside setting makes is an attractive place to visit too. The fortress played an important role in the two sieges of Jinju by the Japanese, taking place in 1592 and 1593.

The Jinju National Museum is located within the castle grounds and it gives insight into the two invasions at Jinju and the battles of the Imjin War that took place over the following years. Two other sights within Jinju Fortress grounds are the Nongae Shrine, and the beautiful Chokseongnu Pavilion.

Nam Gang Prehistoric Site

A short distance outside of Jinju is a site that’s associated with a far more ancient history. This prehistoric site, also known as Daepyeong, has been dated to as far back as 3500 BC as a result of radiocarbon testing and analysis of pottery found here.

Shopping in Jinju

Jinju is an excellent place to buy some traditional South Korean articles. Just opposite the fortress for example is a store selling silks that are both very good quality and reasonably priced. The traditional flea market is also a good place to buy all sorts of items, or just browse the numerous shops that line the city’s streets.

Festivals in Jinju

If you’re planning a visit to Jinju you may like to coincide it with one of the city’s festivals. In May the Nongae Festival takes place and this commemorates the heroic actions of Nongae who committed suicide in order to kill a Japanese general, and to remember the 70,000 Koreans who died during the Imjin War. The Jinju Namgang Lantern Festival that’s held in October every year is another popular and spectacular event.

When Should You Visit Jinju?

Jinju has a humid climate that gives the city fairly hot and humid summers and cool winters. Being situated near the southern coast means Jinju is not as cold as some interior parts of South Korea, though it can suffer more from the effect of late summer typhoons. June to September are the warmest months but also the rainiest.
