Flights to Kangnung
Places in South Korea
Situated on the north east coast of South Korea, Kangnung is a small city, and you can probably see all the sights by getting around on foot. More commonly known as Gangneung, not very many people speak English so you should have a rough idea of where you want to go in Kangnung when you are sight-seeing.
Flights to Kangnung
The Gangneung Airbase (airport code: KAG) no longer handles any civilian traffic or flights to Kangnung. Therefore the best way to get a flight to Kangnung is to arrive at Seoul's Incheon International Airport (code: ICN) and take the bus from there to Kangnung. When coming from the UK, most flights to Gangneung have 1 transfer stop. Emirates Airlines connects in Dubai; Turkish Airlines connects in Istanbul, and Lufthansa makes their stop in Istanbul. Most flights to Kangnung are between 12 and 20 hours long.
Kangnung Tourist Attractions
Gyeongpodae
The pillared pavilion at Gyeongpodae beach is a popular tourist attraction, particularly for viewing the full moon. Inside, there are displays of classic poetry. Gyeongpodae is about 4 miles (6km) away from the city, and it is open between 9am and 6pm every day of the year. There are several other traditional pavilions in the area, and the beach itself is a great place to relax and go swimming. Not too far away is the Gyeongpoho lake bird sanctuary.
Daegwallyeong Museum
This cultural museum in Gangneung has 6 main exhibit halls, with displays of Buddhist art, folk paintings, calligraphy, bronzes and ceramics. The dolmen building itself has earned an architectural award. Out on the grounds, there are more exhibits of stone pagodas, statues and a running water mill. The museum has an admission fee, and is open from 9am until 6pm. They are closed on major holidays.
Charmsori Gramophone and Edison Science Museum
A museum that's a little different, the Charmsori Gramophone and Edison Science Museum has the largest collection of gramophones in the world. The collection includes more than 4,000 record players, 150,000 records and thousands of other related items. But there is more than just phonographs. There are other displays about film, music, electricity and more, and it's a fun spot for younger visitors.
Odaesan National Park
This national park surrounds the Odaesan Mountain that rises up in the middle and is accessible from Kangnung. Aside from hiking up the mountain, you can see a number of Buddhist temples and shrines, or just enjoy the natural scenery. There is an active monastery in the park as well, which can be visited but should be treated with respect.
Unification Park
The highlight of Unification Park is a 4,000 ton decommissioned warship that is on display. You can get on board and walk around the ship, which provides some nice views over the water. There is also a North Korean submarine on display in the park, as well as pavilions that showcase the history of the conflict between North and South Korea. There is admission to enter the park.
When Should You Visit Kangnung?
Winters are a little too cold in Kangnung to walk around but the rest of the year is ideal. Any time between April and October is good for travel, though the early spring and fall may require a jacket. The warmest times are in the summer months of July and August, reaching highs of 25C (77F).
