The seaport of Pohang is situated in South Korea, in the North Gyeongsang Province. Pohang is a major industrial city yet it offers beaches and culture, and has beautiful mountains nearby, great for hiking and visiting waterfalls and temples.

Flights to Pohang

The Pohang Airport (airport code: KPO) doesn't accommodate international flights to Pohang, so you will have to fly first to Seoul and then get a local flight to Pohang from there. Asiana Airlines and Korean Air both have regular flights to Pohang from Seoul's Gimpo International Airport (code: GMP). From London, you can fly to Seoul with either Virgin Atlantic or British Airways. They both have one connection in Shanghai, and the total flight time is just under 20 hours.

Pohang Tourist Attractions

Though first and foremost an industrial city, Pohang does have some features that attract tourists too, including domestic and international visitors. The city is situated where the Hyeongsan River meets the Sea of Japan (also known as the East Sea in Korea) in an area that is quite flat, however, travel just a little way inland and you’ll quickly reach scenic mountains with many of their own attractions.

In the City

In the city of Pohang you can make the most of the fact that this is a seaport and enjoy some great seafood. There are numerous restaurants where you sit and sample the fish, or for a real taste of the culture head to the Jukdo Market. This is a fish market near to the port and the centre of the city and is renowned throughout Korea. Within the market you can try one of the many raw-fish restaurants.

Beaches of Pohang

A beach in an industrial city might not appeal, but Pohang’s beaches are popular all the same. Bukbu Beach is one that’s been commercialised to include places to stay, as well as bars and restaurants and is quite packed in the summer months. You can swim here, though the brownish colour of the water is somewhat off-putting. In July Bukbu Beach is the location of Pohang’s International Fireworks Festival.

There are other buses a little further from the city centre than Bukbu, and you’ll find clearer and more appealing waters here. Chilpo Beach is one, and Wolpo Beach is another that’s often les crowded.

The Hand of Harmony

There’s another beach at a small village named Homigot, and though the beach itself is rocky there’s a unique attraction that does attract the crowds. It’s a large, bronze sculpture called the Hand of Harmony, and it sits reaching up out of the sea. Sunrise is the most popular time to visit as you can catch the sun coming up behind the fingers of the hand for a somewhat bizarre photo! If the thought of travelling the distance to this remote village is too much, consider staying in one of the hotels or pensions that the village has.

Bogyeongsa Buddhist Temple

Right on the edges of Pohang is a lush green valley just at the foothills of Mount Naeyeon. Nestled here is a major Buddhist temple, called Bogyeongsa, which is highly recommended for a visit while in Pohang. Nearby there’s also the Yeonsan waterfall.

When Should You Visit Pohang?

Summers in Pohang coincide with the rainy season, so although temperatures are hot there’s plenty of rainfall. Temperatures and rainfall both peak in August at 29.4C. Spring is drier (though still wet), and sunnier, making May a good month to visit – the average high is 23C. Winters are cool in contrast with just a little rain and average highs of 6.5C in January.
