Seoul is the capital and the largest city of South Korea. This bustling metropolis is one of the largest cities in the world, home to over 10 million people. The ancient city of Seoul is now one of the world’s modern cities, filled with skyscrapers and technology, though there are still many beautiful palaces and parks to see here too.
Flights to Seoul
Most visitors coming to Seoul will arrive at the Incheon International Airport (airport code: ICN), located in the nearby city of Incheon, on Yeongjong Island. Shuttles or public buses offer frequent trips from Incheon to Seoul. There are nearly a dozen airlines to choose from for flights to Seoul from London, though none have non-stop routes. All options have at least one connection. Cathay Pacific Airways, British Airways, Qantas Airways all have their stop-over in Hong Kong for flights to Seoul. For a different route, Lufthansa will stop in Munich, or Turkish Airlines transfers in Istanbul.
Seoul Tourist Attractions
Gyeongbok-gung
There are five major palaces in Seoul and Gyeongbok-gung is the most historically important of them. The palace was used for centuries by the Joseon Dynasty before being destroyed by the Japanese in 1592. It was rebuilt, only to be destroyed again by the Japanese in 1910. Most of the palace has now been restored so visitors can see it in its former glory and enjoy the extensive grounds where you’ll also find the Joseon Palace Museum and the Korean Folk Museum.
Changdeok-gung
Second to Gyeonbok-gung in historical importance is Changdeok. This palace was originally built in 1405 and was the seat of power between the years 1618 and 1896. The palace has been listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list after a restoration project brought the palace back to life. Visitors should note that you can only visit inside Changdeong by guided tour and English language tours are only offered 1 few times a day so plan your visit accordingly.
Mount Ingwan
Not so much a mountain but a hill, Mount Ingwan is situated in Seoul and is home to the Ingwan Temple and the Guksadang Shrine. The hill makes a nice place to walk as there are several trails, and also gives you the chance of seeing a ritual performed.
N Seoul Tower
Once the tallest tower in Asia and though it no longer holds that record the tower is a popular attraction all the same. Situated on Namsan Mountain the tower observation deck gives the most stunning city and mountain views. You can use the cable car to get up the mountain then ascend the tower by elevator to one of the four observation decks including one which is a revolving restaurant.
Amusement Parks in Seoul
For a complete change of pace why not visit one of Seoul’s several amusement parks which are very popular with the locals?! There’s Everland which is Korea’s answer to Disneyland or another popular one is one of the largest indoor amusement parks in the world, Lotte World. There are many rides here as well as come culture to be found in the folk museum which shows ancient times in Korea.
When Should You Visit Seoul?
For the warmest temperatures you might want to visit Seoul in the summer, however this is also the time of the East Asian Monsoon. July and August are the hottest months on average, but rainfall is at its highest during these months and humidity is high too. Rainfall can be expected throughout the year but winter has the least. Temperatures are cool in the winter though with an average high of just 1.6C in January, the coldest month. This means maybe spring or autumn are the better times to visit Seoul.
