Taiwan is an Island in East Asia, which is a lesser known gem compared to its neighbours. Claimed but not controlled by China, Taiwan is made up of the main island, known as Formosa (a Portuguese term). The capital of Taiwan is Taipei, a modern city that has many attractions; on one hand it is a very modern city, well developed and has full of modern attractions like clubs and shops. Then there are also plenty of beaches and lush green landscapes to view, plenty of wildlife and flowers to see.

Flying to Taiwan from the UK is easy and you can fly from the major UK airports like Heathrow and Manchester, although there may be some changes involved. Some of the airlines that fly to Taiwan from the UK include American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Thai Airlines, Continental, Delta, Japan Airlines, Singapore Airlines, EVA Air etc. With a valid UK passport you should have no issues entering the country, and it is a safe place to visit and explore. The local airport is Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.

Climate

Taiwan has a tropical climate – in the summer the temperature is on average 25 degrees Celsius. The north of the country is generally cooler than in the south. In the summer, the weather is much hotter and it can get humid; if you are visiting in the summer then you may want to make sure your hotel room has air conditioning. In July and September, typhoons will bring the monsoon and heavy rains so remember your umbrella! September to October has the driest period in Taiwan and the winter is damp and cold.

What to do

Taiwan is surrounded by coastline and therefore has stunning beaches and lots of natural lush greenery. Offshore Islands such as Orchid and Green Island are also worth a visit on a short boat ride. You can go hiking through the mountains or go scuba diving and snorkelling on the beach. The Beitou Hot Springs is a popular place with tourists too. The forests have all types of flora and fauna as well as wildlife. There are various nature reserves for those who love to be close to exotic wildlife.

Taiwan is also like many Asian countries full of rich history. There are many museums and shrines and places which show off the Taiwanese culture. There are many festivals going on; the spring festival, the dragon boat and the moon festival throughout the year. This is a great time to meet the locals and take part in festivities.

Taiwan is a very modern city, on par with Hong Kong and Taiwanese culture, music and films are very popular throughout East Asia. Go shopping in the markets, and get some custom made clothes. Taiwan is also a great place to visit for cheap electronics and gadgets that haven't reached UK shores yet. Make sure that the items you buy are dual voltage and will work once you are back in the UK – some electronics may not work correctly regardless of a plug adaptor.
