Once considered too far away and too expensive to reach for all but the world’s elite, the advent of low-cost airfares has now opened up Thailand to the masses.

Flights from the UK are most frequently available from London Heathrow and there are a number of scheduled airlines who fly to Bangkok, the capital, including British Airways, Qantas, Thai Airways and Eva Airways. Bangkok is one of the largest air hubs in Asia so there is much competition and the opportunity to find good value fares. The city has two airports, though the second airport, Suvarnabhumi Airport (airport code: BKK) has now become the chief one for international and some domestic flights. It is situated 19 miles outside the city and is connected by airport express buses, public buses and taxis.

You can also get an indirect flight to Phuket International Airport from the UK via Bangkok, with several of the major airlines, as well as to Chiang Mai International Airport. You may find it cheaper and less time-consuming though to fly to Bangkok and then find one of Thailand’s cheap airlines to take you on to your final destination, but it would be advisable to look into this before leaving the UK.

Location

Thailand is located in South East Asia with an extensive coast on the Gulf of Thailand as well as a south western coast on the Strait of Malacca, part of the Andaman Sea leading to the Indian Ocean. It borders with Malaysia, Burma (Myanmar), Laos and Cambodia.

North Thailand

North Thailand includes the city of Chiang Mai and the Golden Triangle. Chiang Mai is far quieter than Bangkok and features the historic walled city in its centre with over 30 temples. The city is the gateway to Northern Thailand. The Golden Triangle is the point at which Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet.

Central Thailand

In Thailand’s central region, is the capital and largest city, Bangkok. This is a huge city and is growing at a rapid rate. If you like cities, then Bangkok should be on your list of cities to visit, just for the experience if nothing else! It is likely to overwhelm your senses with its congestion, poverty, heat and pollution. But, when this is added to the Thai architecture, cuisine and tropical climate it becomes quite a likable place!

The must-sees are: the world’s largest reclining Buddha in the Wat Pho temple; Wat Arun (the Temple of Dawn); shopping on Sukhumvit; State Tower and The Dome to the 63rd floor rooftop bar and restaurant.

East Thailand

The eastern Thailand coast has many beaches within reach of Bangkok, the most famous of which is Pattaya. However, if you’re coming to Thailand for a beach holiday, Pattaya isn’t recommended as has suffered over-development and is very busy.

Southern Thailand

It is Southern Thailand which is most famed as a glorious beach location with hundreds of miles of coastline and numerous islands. Phuket is the most well-known; an island on the west coast with many beach resorts differing in development, so you can find busy or quieter beaches to visit depending on your preference.

Ko Samui is another well known destination. This is an island about 50 miles off Thailand’s southern coast and again features a range of both commercialised and quieter beaches. Alternatively the island of Ko Tao is much quieter than both and is famed as a great place for diving.

Climate

Thailand has a tropical climate which is hot and humid throughout the year. Temperatures are typically between 28 – 35C (82-95F). Around Bangkok the rainy season is July to October, though in the south east it is November to February.
