Destinations in Thailand
Written as both Buri Ram and Buriram, this city is the ideal destination to visit if you want to spend time among the many old temples of Thailand. Several large groups of temples are within a short drive from town, and will provide many days of sight-seeing in the area.
Flights to Buri Ram
The Buriram Airport (airport code: BFV) is too small for any major international flights to Buriram, so you will have to arrive in Bangkok and get a local flight to Buri Ram from there. In Bangkok, the main airport is the Suvarnabhumi Airport (code: BKK), and you can get a non-stop flight to Bangkok from the UK with EVA Airways, British Airways or Qantas Airways. A flight with Jet Airways stops once in Bombay, and Lufthansa will take you via Frankfurt. Once in Bangkok you can catch a flight to Buri Ram with Nok Air.
Buri Ram Tourist Attractions
Buriram is located in the Buriram Province, about 150 miles (410km) north of the capital city, Bangkok.
Phanom Rung Historical Park
One of the main attractions for Buriram is the Phanom Rung temple complex, built in the 10th century on the rim of an extinct volcano. The grounds are filled with large Khmer temples, walkways, towers and statuary. Many of the buildings have been restored so there is much to see in its original splendour. Both Hindu and Buddhist structures are found at the site, as it’s been used by many cultures over the past 1,000 years. About 10 minutes away from the park is the Meuang Tam temple site, for more Khmer ruins. There are regular buses to take visitors from Buri Ram to the park.
Wat Angkahn
Wat Angkahn is another temple complex, not that far from Phanom Rung. You'll see several elaborate Buddhist temples built out of sandstone, and decorated with carvings. There is a monastery on the site today.
Other Temple Sites
There are many other temple locations around Buriram where you can see various styles of ancient Hindu and Buddhist temples. Nong Hong Sanctuary, Ban Khok Ngio Sanctuary and the Ku Suan Taeng temples are a few other spots you should think about visiting.
Kao Kradong Forest Park
At the Kao Kradong Forest Park you can enjoy walking through the park, to the top of an extinct volcano at the centre, where a large pool of water has formed over the old mouth of the volcano. A large Buddha statue, known as Phra Suphattharabophit is also on display in the park and is the symbol for Buriram.
Buriram Bird Park
If you are done seeing temples and Hindu architecture, the bird park is a nice change of pace. More than 100 species of birds have been recorded in the park, including some endangered ones. It's only 9 miles (15km) away from the city, near the Huai Talat water reservoir.
