Cha Am isn't a large city and won't have all the major modern amenities you might expect in a tourist destination. But the local beach resorts make this a popular spot for travellers to enjoy the coast, as well as the local historical culture.

Flights to Cha Am

The nearest airport for flights to Cha Am is the Hua Hin Airport (airport code: HHQ) though there are no commercial flights to Cha Am at this time, so you can arrive in Bangkok instead. You can fly with Qantas, British Airways or EVA Airways.

Cha Am Tourist Attractions

Mrigadayavan Palace

The Mrigadayavan Palace was the royal palace of King Rama VI, and is now a popular tourist spot. It was built in the early 1900s, and is a large complex of teak buildings that are elevated on short pillars and all connected by open walkways. It's a short drive south of Cha Am, located right on the beach front. The name is also sometimes spelled Maruekatayawan when in English.

Kaeng Krachan National Park

Also to the south of Cha Am, the largest national park in Thailand, Kaeng Krachan, is filled with rainforests, two large rivers and a dam. There are many marked hiking trails that will take you past waterfalls and through various types of scenery in the park, including a few areas of caves, grasslands and along the rivers. Several species of animals live in the park as well.

Khao Luang Caves

The spectacular Khao Luang Caves are amazing in their own right, but add in the large old Buddhist temples inside and this really is a place you must visit while in Cha Am. Among the limestone stalactites, there are more than 100 Buddhist statues and shrines within the cave. It's a remarkably beautiful place.

Nang Phan Thu Rut Nature Trail

There are a total of 1.8 miles of trails at Nang Phan Thu Rut (also spelled Khao Nang Phanthurat) where you can go hiking through the rocky hills or along the coast. It can be a little strenuous at times, but it’s not a difficult hike overall. Troops of monkeys are sometimes seen though most of the wildlife you will see are birds.

The Beaches and Resorts

You may not think of beaches when you first think of Thailand, but that is exactly why many people come to Cha Am. There are several white sand beaches just outside of town, and many world-class beach resorts are available for accommodations. Aside from sunbathing, the ocean is available for many water sports as well.

When Should You Visit Cha Am?

No matter when you plan your visit to Cha Am, it will be over 30C (86F) during the daytime. But from March until May, it will be closer to 34C (93F), making it less comfortable for sight-seeing. The best times to visit are between October and December. It will still be 30C during those months, but will cool off more during the evenings. The late summer and early autumn can be a bit rainy as well.
