Krabi is a stunning town in the south of Thailand. It is an area that is known for its natural beauty, stunning landscapes and unspoilt scenery. The area is one of the less visited locations in Thailand so it remains largely unspoilt even though there is a nice selection of hotels in the area by the beaches. Much of the land around Krabi is a national park, and there are over 80 smaller islands dotted around, some of which were used as a location for the film “The Beach”. Krabi has a mix of lots of races and cultures; there are many Thai, Chinese and Malaysian people living there.

Flights

Krabi is not a very common destination so you can expect to pay a little more for your flights. Sometimes it can work out cheaper to fly into Asia, for example to Hong Kong or Singapore, and then take a local airline into Krabi. You can fly to Krabi with Thai Airways, Air Asia, Nok Air and One-Taw-Go. You can also find package holiday to the area by using the major tour operators, who will arrange all your accommodation for you at the same time. Book in advance for the cheapest tickets.

Climate

Krabi has a tropical monsoon climate which means that it is warm for most of the year but extremely wet for the other. April to May and September to October are the hottest months, but the latter are also the wettest months of the year. The best time to visit Krabi may be January to March as you will avoid the heavy rains and the extremely humid weather. The average temperatures in the summer can reach 32 degrees centigrade, and up to 36 degrees from September to October. The showers are generally thundery and stormy, and although wet offer a relief to the hot weather.

What to do

If you go to Krabi, you must visit some of the stunning neighbouring Islands. Chicken Island or Hua Khwan is named after a rock on the Island that – well, looks like a chicken head! Whilst there is no where to stay on here, take a day trip and enjoy the warm water, an excellent place to swim and dive. Koh Poda is a small island, that is only 1 km in diameter but it is surrounded by white, soft sand. The coral reef is nearby so this is a great place to go diving and snorkelling. It is quite a popular and therefore slightly crowded choice. Koh Hong is a little further away but holds some stunning lagoons and lots of bright fish that will approach you whilst you swim. There is a small fee to visit this Island.

The Khao Phra Wildlife Sanctuary is a great place to go if you like to birds or other interesting rare bird species. Nearby are some hot springs you can go swimming in, if you like the spa experience.

Krabi has a number of national parks too; here you can camp, dive, trek and so on. The Nopparat Thara National Park has an interesting museum that is full of fossils form under the sea.
