Destinations in Vietnam
Once the imperial capital of Vietnam, today Hue is a city with much history, combined with modern conveniences, to make this a popular tourist destination. Hue is located just a few miles inland in Central Vietnam.
Flights to Hue
The Phu Bai International Airport (airport code: HUI) does accept international flights to Hue Phu Bai, but when you are arriving from London, you will usually transfer at a larger airport in Vietnam first. The airport is about a 25 minute drive from town, and there are taxis and buses. British Airways has a flight to Hue that goes through Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City, but Virgin Atlantic stops in Shanghai and Hanoi. Air New Zealand also offers flights to Hue, transferring in Hong Kong and Ho Chi Minh City.
Hue Tourist Attractions
Imperial Citadel
The Imperial Citadel (locally called Dai Noi), is one of the main attractions to see around Hue. Some parts of the complex have been destroyed over years of war, but many buildings are still intact and many have been restored. You can see several temples, pavilions, ornate gates and water-filled moats around the complex. Within the citadel is the Thai Hoa Palace and the Truong Sanh Residence. There is an entry fee for the whole citadel, and they are open through the day. You should plan on a full afternoon to see everything.
Tombs of the Emperors
The tombs are spread out along the Perfume River, so you'll need a means to get from one to the other. You can go by bike, or book a cruise along the river. They date back to the late 19th century, during the French colonial period of Vietnam. There are 6 main ones that you would expect to visit, though some are very run down. The best one to see is the tomb of Khai Dinh, and the tomb of Minh Mang is also very elaborate. Each one will have its own admission cost, and they are typically open from early morning until the evening.
Thien Mu Pagoda
Also located on the river in Hue is the Thien Mu Pagoda, filled with many Buddha images and statues. It's a beautiful place for photographs and it's located just outside of the city.
Bach Ma National Park
For something a little less historical, you can venture farther away from Hue to the Bach Ma National Park. The park encompasses mostly forested mountain terrain, and you can go hiking through some parts of the park (though not all). There are several species of monkey, including macaques and gibbons, as well as many birds and reptiles in the park. It's 22 miles (35km) away from Hue, heading towards Da Nang.
The DMZ
The De-Militarized Zone can be visited from Hue, either with a tour group or on your own. Many buildings and bunkers are still in place from the Vietnam War, as well as crashed helicopters and several pieces of large artillery. You can also see the Vinh Moc tunnels where the locals hid from the American bombings.
When Should You Visit Hue?
It's warm in Hue all year long, with May through August being quite hot. It will usually reach 33C (92F) during these summer months. After that, the rainy season begins and it will be very wet until the end of December. So the most comfortable time to visit Hue would be between January and March, when it's drier, and the temperatures will be between 23 and 26C (73 and 79F).
