The Mount Lofty Ranges to the east of Adelaide are a popular journey out from the city as the summit provides wonderful views over the city and beyond to the Adelaide Plains. You can make a day of it up on Mount Lofty as there is a restaurant here and a gift shop with tourist information. Whilst you’re visiting the Mount Lofty region, Cleland National Park will be in your vicinity. Here you can see and get close to Australian wildlife including kangaroos, wallabies and emus. Alternatively Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary is another option for seeing wildlife and this is located about 25 minutes from Adelaide city centre. Warrawong has the added benefit of giving visitors the opportunity to see rarer Australian species like the platypus, pademelon and possums.

Keeping with the wildlife theme, south of Adelaide is the Fleurieu Peninsula. Spend a day here visiting wineries, enjoying the beaches and seeing fairy penguins, or take a whale watching cruise.

The Belair National Park is another popular destination just outside Adelaide. Here you’ll find many bushwalking trails and an adventure playground, plus the Old Government House.

In the city centre, Adelaide Botanical Gardens are attractive for visitors who want to see more of the plant life of Southern Australia. The Bicentennial Conservatory here features a simulated tropical rainforest.

Adelaide has a variety of museums focusing on different aspects of life in this region. Port Adelaide Maritime Museum and Port Adelaide Lighthouse offer insight into the maritime history of the city, whilst the Migration Museum and South Australian Museum concentrate more on the people and history of Adelaide and surrounds.

Talking of history, a popular destination is the historical suburb of Glenelg. This suburb of Adelaide features a long pier and with its Grand Hotel you could be mistaken for thinking you’d returned to Brighton! The area has historic trams which you can take to get here from the CBD, and whilst here be sure to visit the Glenelg Museum and Glenelg Town Hall.
