Brampton Island is an island off the shore of Queensland, in north east Australia. It’s just offshore from the town of Mackay and most of Brampton Island is within the Brampton Islands National Park.
Flights to Brampton Island
There are no direct international flights to Brampton Island (airport code: BNP) from the UK. Travellers will need to make flight reservations from the UK to one of the major Australian cities and then book a flight to Mackay (airport code: MKY), followed by a short flight to Brampton Island. Regular flights to Mackay are available with several different Australian based airlines such as Virgin Blue, Qantas Airways, Tiger Airways, and Jetstar. Tiger Airways offers direct flights to Mackay from Melbourne, and Jetstar flies regularly to Mackay from Brisbane. Onward flights to Brampton Island from Mackay can then be reserved through Australasian Jet, or take a boat.

Brampton Island is just a small island measuring less than 3 square miles in area. It’s located just a short way off shore from the town of Mackay in Queensland, in north eastern Australia, and the island is part of the Cumberland Group.
There are several reasons why you might want to spend some time on Brampton Island. Most of the island is within the Brampton Islands National Park; a scenic area where there’s hiking and camping available. Also on Brampton Island is the Brampton Island Resort which is a popular and fairly exclusive resort run by Voyages. Brampton Island is also within the boundaries of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.
Brampton Islands National Park
This attractive national park is popular for the variety of things you can see and do here. Camping is available, but only on the neighbouring Carlisle Island. If you want to stay on Brampton Island the only option is to stay at the Brampton Island Resort.
You can spend time enjoying the numerous hiking routes that can be found on Brampton Island and when you feel like cooling off you can enjoy a swim in the beautiful azure blue waters that surround the island. Wildlife watching is popular too, on both land and water, and being within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area some activities are restricted in the water. This doesn’t stop you snorkelling or diving and seeing the abundant marine life in most spots around the island though.
Brampton Island Resort
Many of the visitors who come to Brampton Island will stay at the Voyages resort. This is a popular resort with couples and especially those who enjoy lots of activities as there are numerous things you can do within the resort, or that can be organised around Brampton Island. This includes a short golf course, beach volleyball, swimming pools, beautiful beaches, tennis, and of course loads of watersports. However, these activities are only available if you’re a guest at the resort.
When Should You Visit Brampton Island?
Brampton Island has a humid subtropical climate which means it’s warm to hot throughout the year, However, it does have high rainfall during the summer months, December to February, continuing through to April and May so it may be better to visit during the Australian winter, from June to September, when average high temperatures are in the low to mid 20’s C (mid 70’s F).
