Brisbane is the state capital of Queensland, and is the third most populated city in Australia. The city is names after Sir Thomas Brisbane who was the governor of New South Wales in the 1800s. Brisbane has an interesting history; it developed into the city it is today after an abandoned penal colony settlement at Redclifft which is towards the north. Brisbane also hosted the 1982 Commonwealth Games, the 2001 Goodwill Games and the World Expo’88.

Climate
Brisbane has a humid subtropical climate which means the summers are hot and humid and the winters are milder. From the spring to autumn there are many thunderstorms and severe hailstones as well as heavy winds; be aware if you are visiting that you may experience some dramatic weather conditions! From 2006 Brisbane experience drought and the water availability levels in the damns fell to one quarter of their normal capacity therefore the residents have had to moderate their water usage – the result is that Brisbane has one of the lowest users of water in the Western world.
What to do
Brisbane has lots of annual events to take part I – the Ekka for example is held in August (a culture show) and the River Festival is held in September, filled with fireworks and impressive displays at the South Bank Parklands. The Warana (which means blue skies) is a special festival held in September which is a way to celebrate the city. The Paniyiri festival at Musgrave Park is a Greek cultural event and the Brisbane International Film Festival in July and August has a variety of films showing.
Other popular areas include Roma Street Parkland, City Botanic Gardens, Portside Wharf and Brisbane Forest Park. In the area of Mount Coot-there is the Brisbane Botanical Gardens where the Planetarium and Japanese Gardens are held.
When it comes to shopping there is lots of variety; there are department stores, boutiques, china town; try Brisbane City Centre, Queen Street Mall, Brunswick Mall, Fortitude Valley etc. Fortitude valley also has a number of unique bands and theatres so you can watch some films or listen to a concert.
