Byron Bay Tourist Attractions
Like many seaside towns along the coast of New South Wales Byron Bay has grown up around the tourism industry and has been attracting surfers for many years. It’s not a big town that’s full of hotels and tourist amenities but it has everything you need for a pleasant and enjoyable holiday where you can enjoy the laid back and slightly bohemian lifestyle that Byron Bay appears to have developed.
There are several beaches at Byron Bay where you can simply spend your days swimming and relaxing on the sandy beach. The beaches are popular but don’t often get over-crowded so there’s usually space for everyone. The weekends and public holidays are always busier though so avoid those times if you can.
As well as the great surf and swimming opportunities at Byron Bay there are numerous other outdoor activities you can enjoy too. Scuba diving and snorkelling is popular, especially at Julian Rocks five minutes from the shore. This pair of small islands is now part of the new Cape Byron Marine Park and is said to be one of the best diving spots in Australia due to its large variety of marine life. Also out on the water you can go whale watching; again the area around Julian Rocks is regarded as a great place to spot the humpback whales, particularly between May and September.
Cape Byron, which is a headland just next to Byron Bay, is the easternmost point on the mainland of Australia. As well as saying you’ve been to this point you can see the Cape Byron Lighthouse.
Just a few miles outside Byron Bay is the Arakwal National Park. This area protects some vulnerable species including two native frog species, and is home to many different species of birds.
When Should You Visit Byron Bay?
If you’re looking for a summer holiday in Byron Bay you should visit in the peak season which will be December to February when the weather is warmest and sunniest. For surfing you’re sometimes better off coming outside of the summer season for the best waves if you’re experienced. The temperate climate means that winters are mild but much wetter than the summer, so no good really for enjoying the beaches!
