Situated in Far North Queensland in Australia is the city of Cairns. This coastal town is a popular stopping point on any tour of Australia as it’s nearby to some of the country’s most scenic attractions including the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree National Park.

Flights to Cairns

The Cairns International Airport (airport code: CNS) is the main travel hub for the northern Queensland region of Australia. There is a regular shuttle from the airport directly into the city, and private taxis are available as well. All flights to Cairns have one connection usually in one of the other large Australian cities (as well as a technical stop used for re-fuelling). A flight to Cairns with Qantas Airways connects in Sydney, and British Airways makes its transfer stop in Melbourne. The exception is the Virgin Atlantic flight that travels to Singapore then directly to Cairns.

Cairns Tourist Attractions

Cairns is a very attractive city that offers a lot to tourists who come this far north in Australia. Not only does the city have numerous attractions of its own it’s great to use a gateway to some other top destinations, and has a wonderful climate.

The Lagoon

With the fabulous climate Cairns is a city that you can enjoy beaches and swimming, plus many other water sports in. The Lagoon is a popular place for the whole family to go swimming. It’s actually an artificial lagoon but this means that it’s free from some of Australia’s dangerous sea creatures that you really must watch out for if you’re planning on swimming in the sea itself, particularly from October to May.

Spend the day relaxing here and cook up a barbecue in the adjoining barbecue area, or take a walk along the esplanade or the boardwalk.

Diving the Great Barrier Reef

Cairns is a great city from which to enjoy Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and as you would expect there are many companies who are ready and willing to take you out on a tour. It takes less than an hour by boat to get there and once there you can go snorkelling or scuba diving to really experience this amazing place.

Rainforestation Nature Park

A short distance outside of Cairns in Kuranda is the Rainforestation Nature Park. Set within a rainforest that has World Heritage status this nature park gives visitors a look at the local indigenous cultures, native wildlife and the rainforest through its three main areas: the Army Duck Rainforest Tour, the Pamagirri Aboriginal Experience, and the Koala and Wildlife Park.

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

Also in the Kuranda area of Cairns is the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway which is a scenic cableway that runs over the Barron Gorge National Park between the suburb of Caravonica and Kuranda. The Skyway covers a distance of 7.5 kilometres (4.6 miles) and takes 1.5 hours one way, but there are numerous packages available so you can really make the most of the journey and the surrounding area. For example you can go out one way on the Skyway and come back on the Kuranda Scenic Railway. You could also get a package with entrance to the Rainforestation Nature Park, or to the Kuranda Wildlife Experience, or even to the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park.

When Should You Visit Cairns?

Cairns has a tropical monsoon climate which means the city is hot, but also quite wet at certain times of the year. The wet season is from December to April while the drier season is May to November, however it’s not completely dry as there is still rainfall during this period. December and January are the hottest months when the average high is 31.4C (89F), and July is the coolest month with average high of 25.7C (78F).
