Coolangatta Tourist Attractions
Named after a schooner that wrecked just off the coast in 1846, the town of Coolangatta was actually one of the first settlements along the Gold Coast with Europeans living here since around the 1830s. The first proper settlement was established in the 1860s, and the town proper in 1884.
Though Coolangatta is now known as a tourist destination the town didn’t start life this way. Coolangatta was, and still is, a border town, sitting in Queensland but right by the border with New South Wales. Today, you can pass from one state to another without even realising, but back in the 1800s things were quite different. Coolangatta was a border town so it had a customs office, as well as a border fence and gates. It’s hard to imagine these things being here now but up until a few years ago they still were!
It was when the railway was extended to the twin town of Tweed Heads in 1904 that Coolangatta began to develop into a tourist destination. The town developed with a real holiday town feel, including hotels and guest houses to cater for the growing number of people who visited, and more and more shops and other services sprang up here too.
Coolangatta isn’t at the heart of the Gold Coast but it’s a great entry point for anyone wanting to visit this beautiful piece of coastline. With the Gold Coast Airport on its doorstep it’s easy to get here, and once you arrive you can decide to stay at the quieter end of the Gold Coast, here in Coolangatta, or head further north and stay more centrally within the Gold Coast city itself. Wherever you choose to stay you’ll be treated to some great hospitality, miles upon miles of beaches, fantastic surfing, culture, restaurants and shops. As well as these things that you would expect to find, the Gold Coast area also has theme parks, water parks and more to enjoy too.
When Should You Visit Coolangatta?
Coolangatta has a great climate for visiting at any time of the year, but is hottest and best or enjoying the beach in the summertime. Temperatures peak in January and February when the average high is a warm 28.5C, and the average low drops down only to 21.8C. The only drawback with summer is that it’s the wettest time also.
