Cowra Tourist Attractions
Cowra was inhabited by aboriginal people before the first white explorers made their way west from the coast of New South Wales. Originally the first white explorer declared that he didn’t believe this area was fit for settlement by white people when he came through in 1815 but by 1844 a town was beginning to form here anyway and was officially established in 1849.
During the Second World War Cowra was home to a Prisoner Of War camp where mainly Japanese soldiers were being detained. The camp no longer exists today but it is famous all the same because there was an attempted mass breakout from Cowra on August 5 1944. Around 550 Japanese POWs were involved in the attempted breakout and as a result 231 of them were killed and 108 were wounded. The breakout was the largest attempted breakout of the Second World War and resulted in a Japanese War Cemetery being built for those who had died.
Cowra Japanese War Cemetery is the only cemetery of its kind in Australia and is today one of Cowra’s tourist attractions.
Alongside the cemetery is a beautiful Japanese Garden. The Cowra Japanese Garden was designed by Ken Nakajima who was a renowned designer of such gardens and the first stage of it was opened in 1979. Designed in the Edo period style this is a strolling garden and features beautiful water features including several lakes, bridges, cherry blossoms, a teahouse and much more.
The Cowra Japanese Garden is actually the largest Japanese garden in the Southern Hemisphere and it hosts the annual Sakura Matsuri (cherry blossom festival) every year around late September or early October.
