The city of Darwin is situated in the north of Australia and it’s the capital of the Northern Territory. Although it’s the largest city in the territory Darwin is a relatively small and attractive city with a good mix of attractions for tourists to enjoy.

Flights to Darwin

There are a few smaller airports for charter flights, but the main airport for international flights to Darwin is the Darwin International Airport (airport code: DRW), located about 8 miles (13 km) outside the city. Depending on the airline, there are flights to Darwin from London with either 1 or 2 connections. British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Qantas Airways all transfer once in Sydney, however these flights will also have a re-fuelling stop somewhere in Asia usually. Or for a different route, you can book a flight to Darwin with Thai Airways and connect in Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City.

Darwin Tourist Attractions

A selection of historical, cultural, and natural attractions can be found in Darwin, plus this city has a vibrant and cosmopolitan feel about it that should appeal to many different visitors.

Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory

This excellent museum is set in a wonderful position on Darwin Harbour amongst tropical gardens. The museum features an interesting mixture of arts, natural history, culture and more both in terms of Australia and internationally, plus a historical focus on the Northern Territory. There are five permanent galleries and a touring gallery, and the café and museum shop make this an attraction you could visit for the whole day.

George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens

Just outside the city centre are Darwin’s botanical gardens. Covering an area of 42 hectares the gardens are open throughout the day and are free to enter. You’ll see both local flora and also plants from tropical habitats around the world in a number of themed areas.

Fannie Bay Gaol

In the Fannie Bay area of Darwin is the historic Fannie Bay Gaol. This was the city’s major prison for nearly 100 years from its opening in 1883. Additions were made to the prison right up until the 1950’s when two maximum security wings were added. The gallows were used for executions right up until 1952. The gaol is free to enter and experience the prison’s gruesome past!

Charles Darwin National Park

The city is named after naturalist Charles Darwin and so is this national park, situated just a few miles outside of the city. The Charles Darwin National Park is a little different to what you might expect as the area has many World War 2 bunkers scattered across it. One of these has been converted into the park’s visitor centre and holds a WW2 memorabilia display. Around the rest of the park you’re awarded with great views from lookouts towards Darwin, and you can explore the park by hiking or mountain biking on its trails.

Darwin Wharf Precinct

The bunkers constructed in what is now Charles Darwin National Park are just one legacy remaining from the Second World War. Being a major city that was located on the coast Darwin was a prime target for Japanese attack. One such attack took place in 1942, killing around 243 people and focusing the attack on this wharf area. Today the wharf features numerous historical markers.

When Should You Visit Darwin?

Darwin has a far more tropical climate than somewhere like Sydney, with distinct wet and dry seasons. You’ll probably want to try to avoid visiting during the wet season as this is also associated with tropical cyclones. Darwin’s summer (December to March) is when most of the rain falls and lightning and high humidity are common. Temperatures remain high and fairly constant across the year, so even if you’re visiting in the winter you can expect average high temperatures in the low 30’s C.
