It's not one of the bigger tourist towns in Australia, but Dubbo does have some great local attractions and historic charm. Situated in the Australian state of New South Wales, Dubbo is 258 miles to the north west of Sydney.
Flights to Dubbo
You won't be able to get an international flight to Dubbo City Airport (airport code: DBO), but there are local flights to Dubbo available from Sydney and Broken Hill. This means you have several options – either catch a flight to Sydney then transfer to a flight to Dubbo, or rent a car and drive to Dubbo, or take a train from Sydney. Sydney Airport (code: SYD) can be reached from London with Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, Air China or Qantas and if catching a flight to Dubbo from Sydney you can go with QantasLink or Regional Express.

Taronga Western Plains Zoo
The Taronga Western Plains Zoo's population includes many African animals like elephants, zebras, giraffes, hippos and meerkats, and there are more than 700 animals in all. There are several restaurants for refreshments, and daily shows and demonstrations too. There is an admission fee to enter, but it covers 2 days admittance so you can come back and see some more the following day. They are open 365 of the year, and it’s located just outside the city.
Dundullimal Homestead
You can step back into the past just on the outskirts of Dubbo, to the Dundullimal Homestead which was built in the 1840s. It's furnished in period style, and the grounds include a blacksmith's forge, stables and a coach room. There are guides to walk you around the property or you can see the sights on your own. It is usually open Tuesdays to Thursdays, from 10 to 4.
Old Dubbo Gaol
First it was the local courthouse on Maquire Street, then it was used as the Dubbo jail for more than 100 years. Today it's a popular tourist attraction that mixes museum displays with costumed actors to give you a live look at what crime (and punishment) was like in the late 1800s. The Dubbo Gaol is open 7 days a week, and there are special tours and performances throughout the year.
Western Plains Cultural Centre
Located on Wingewarra Street, the Western Plains Cultural Centre is a mix of museum and art gallery. Admission is free, and you can see the history of the area through many different kinds of artwork and artefacts.
Clay Pan Gallery
Along similar lines is the Clay Pan Gallery where you can see a number of exhibits of local art in the form of sculpture, ceramics, woodwork and paintings. It's just a little place, but a fine stop to relax and enjoy some beautiful surroundings. There is a garden outside as well.
When Should You Visit Dubbo?
Compared to the UK, the seasons are reversed in Australia so the hottest times of the year in Dubbo are between December and March. The temperatures can reach over 30C (86F). June, July and August are milder with highs averaging around 16C (61F). During these months, it can drop to near freezing at nights so pack for cooler weather if you travel in the winter. If that is too cool, aim for either May or October for warmer weather that is not too hot.
