Flights to Dunk Island
Destinations in Australia
Dunk Island is part of the Family Islands National Park, about 2.5 miles (4 km) off the coast of eastern Australia. It's also part of the famous Great Barrier Reef reserve area and though not a huge island, Dunk Island still has plenty to see and do.
Flights to Dunk Island
The tiny airstrip that is the Dunk Island Airport (airport code: DKI) only handles small aircraft, usually with Hinterland Aviation who provide flights to Dunk Island coming to and from Cairns. Organise your travel plans so that you arrive at Cairns International Airport (code: CNS) and transfer from there on a flight to Dunk Island. From the UK you can fly with Qantas for a stop in Sydney, or with British Airways for a transfer in Singapore. Singapore Airlines also goes through Singapore, but is 10 hours longer than the same route with British Airways' 25-hour flight.
Dunk Island Tourist Attractions
Family Islands National Park
More than half of the island is designated as part of the national park, so there are more than enough places to go hiking. You'll be able to see the local rainforest, sandy beaches and all the other landscapes the island has to offer. You can actually walk the entire route around the island in about 4 hours.
Mount Kootaloo
For the best views of Dunk Island, take a hike up to the top of Mt. Kootaloo. There are marked trails right to the peak so you won't have to do any rock climbing to reach the summit. The top is about 271m (890 feet) above sea level, and will provide some amazing opportunities for photos.
Mission Beach
You can take the ferry across to the mainland and have a day trip out to see the sights of Mission Beach. There are more protected rainforests around the town, and it's known as a great area to see wild cassowaries, an endangered flightless bird that is native to the area. You can also find a little more shopping at Mission Beach while you are there. The ferry will drop you off at Clump Point, at the north end of Mission Beach. It's a good spot for some fishing too.
Water Sports
Between the sandy beaches and the nearby reefs, Dunk Island is ideal for just about any water sport or activity you can think of. Scuba diving, snorkelling, swimming, boating, wind sailing, and surfing should keep any ocean-lover occupied during their stay!
Bruce Arthur Artist Colony
Artists of all kinds have come to this remote colony for some peace and quiet, and a chance to pursue their artistic visions. The compound is open to visitors on Mondays and Thursdays, between 10am and 1pm. You can tour the colony and purchase handcrafted artworks.
