Destinations in Australia
Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world, and a popular tourist spot for outdoor activities and wildlife watching. It’s situated by the southern coast of Queensland, Australia and is a World Heritage Site.
Flights to Fraser Island
The only flights to Fraser Island Airport (airport code: OKB) are charters that come from the Sunshine Coast Airport (code: MCY), so you will have to fly to there if you are coming from the UK. Alternatively forego the flight to Fraser Island and catch a ferry instead. Flights to the Sunshine Coast Airport are available from the UK with Qantas Airways, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic all flying via Sydney (plus a fuel stop along the way). Singapore Airlines offers another option, a flight that goes through Singapore and then Sydney. Flight times can range from 25 to 35 hours long.
Fraser Island Tourist Attractions
Interior Lakes
Unfortunately, the ocean beaches are beautiful to walk on but are not safe for swimming. There are large populations of sharks and jellyfish, and the currents are too strong for swimming. Thankfully, there are lakes on the island that provide a swimming spot instead. The ones most visited by tourists are Lake MacKenzie and Lake Wabby. They can both get busy during the holiday season but do offer ideal water for swimming. The Champagne Pools is another spot for some inland swimming. The surf crashes over the rocks, filling up the sandy pools which makes the water frothy (hence the name).
Maheno Shipwreck
An unusual landmark on 75 Mile Beach is the shipwreck of the S.S. Mahano. Originally, the boat had been both a cruise ship as well as a hospital ship during WWI but when being towed for scrap at the end of its life in 1935, it was beached here on Fraser Island where is remains today. It's an interesting sight but is too rusted for any interior exploration. Climbing is strictly prohibited.
Seventy Five Mile Beach
The beach is actually 75 miles long (give or take a few feet) and is the main beach on the east coast of the island. As already mentioned, swimming in the ocean is not safe but you are free to walk on the beach and enjoy the landscape and beautiful scenery.
The Cathedrals
These are not your typical churches that are great photo opportunities in historic cities. The Cathedrals of Fraser Island refers to the coloured sandstone cliffs towards the north end of 75 Mile Beach (though not as far as Indian Head). Erosion has whittled away some of the stone, leaving some unique shapes and formations in the naturally layered sandstone.
Outdoor Activities
If you just want to get outside and see the island, there are plenty of tour options for you. You can go off-roading along 75 Mile Beach, fishing in many locations, and there is hiking along the coast or through the inland rainforests. For the serious hiker, you can tackle the Fraser Island Great Walk. It's a 56 mile (90km) hiking trail that runs lengthwise along the island. You'll need a week for it, though you can take shorter walks if you don’t want to go the entire distance.
When Should You Visit Fraser Island?
The milder months of June to August are the best time to visit if you are going to do a lot of hiking or other outdoor activities, but the average temperatures of 15C (59F) may be too cool for any swimming. In that case, plan your trip between October and April when the days are considerably warmer. December and January are the hottest, reaching 28C (83F).
