Kempsey Tourist Attractions
From a tourist’s point of view Kempsey is part of the Macleay Valley Coast where there’s plenty of attractive scenery, small towns and attractions to visit, so you can use Kempsey as a base for exploring more of this region. Kempsey itself has some lovely features too, including the following:
Historic Kempsey
Kempsey was founded in 1834 when an immigrant from Birmingham was attracted to the riverside setting. The town took off on the back of the logging and sawmilling industries, making use of the then abundant red cedars that grew here. With the booming town’s economy came people and construction of buildings and amenities.
The post office, built in 1886, is one of the grand buildings still standing from that time, plus there’s another post office, even older, in West Kempsey. It was built in 1879 and there’s also a court house from 1859. These are some of the main landmarks, though there are numerous colonial buildings still here today that date from that period, giving the whole of Kempsey quite an old-world feel.
Macleay River Historical Society’s Museum
You can read and learn far more about the history of Kempsey and the Macleay River Valley at the Historical Society’s Museum. This is housed within the modern Kempsey Cultural Centre where you’ll also find the Dunghutti Ngaku Aboriginal Art Gallery and the Visitor Information Centre.
Rudder Park Lookout
For some great views of the Kempsey area, head up to Rudder Park Lookout. This is where the first English settler, Enoch Rudder, set up his home and it’s now a park with excellent views.
The Riverside
Sitting on the river as Kempsey does, visitors can enjoy the scenic walks and picnic spots along the riverside. This part of Kempsey has also been developed to provide a whole manner of other amenities including restaurants, specialty shops, galleries, a cinema, hotels, golf, ten-pin bowling and more; plenty for the whole family!
When Should You Visit Kempsey?
Kempsey has quite a high average rainfall, but pleasant temperatures to enjoy. During the summer, December to February, temperatures are warm but not excessively so with the average high in the mid to high 20’s C. Winters are mild too, though wet, and the coolest months are July and August.
