Destinations in Australia
Lizard Island and the Lizard Island National Park is in the far north of the Great Barrier Reef, off the coast of north western Australia. Lizard Island is a popular destination, and attracts two types of tourists: those looking for a luxurious retreat, and those looking for a back-to-nature holiday.
Flights to Lizard Island
The Lizard Island Airport (airport code: LZR) is part of the Lizard Island National Park and only handles flights to Lizard Island with Hinterland Aviation, coming out of Cairns. So you can get a flight to Cairns, and take a charter flight to Lizard Island. The Cairns Airport (code: CNS) handles a few major airline flights, but your choices are still limited when coming from the UK. British Airways will stop once in Tokyo, and Virgin Atlantic makes a connection in Singapore instead. A 2-stop flight to Cairns with Qantas transfers in Singapore and then in Brisbane.
Lizard Island Tourist Attractions
It was named Lizard Island by Captain Cook who visited in 1770 and observed that the only animals that appeared to be living here were lizards and nothing else. Captain Cook used the island as a viewpoint to chart his course out and through the Great Barrier Reef by climbing to the highest point. Today this summit is known as Cook’s Look and is a popular spot for tourists to climb and enjoy the views too!
