Melbourne Tourist Attractions
Melbourne is a lovely city with a variety of things to see and do. There’s a great contrast between attractive Victorian architecture and modern high-rises that give Melbourne more of a unique feel when compared to somewhere like Sydney.
Shopping in Melbourne is popular and there’s something here for everyone; from the modern Docklands with its shops, plus entertainment, bars and restaurants, to the large and more traditional Queen Victoria Market.
Melbourne has a number of districts outside the city centre, all with their own appeal. The beachside district of St Kilda is one of the most popular and includes the historic theme park, Luna Park, built in 1912. Strolling along the St Kilda Pier and St Kilda Esplanade is popular too, plus the Esplanade Sunday Market is usually a big hit. St Kilda Botanical Gardens are impressive, despite the water restrictions in the city, as are the Royal Botanic Gardens in South Yarra. Another beachside district is Brighton, with the popular Brighton Beach, great if lying on the beach is your thing!
Other districts include Carlton. This is one of Melbourne’s historical areas and houses the Royal Exhibition and Carlton Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other attractions in Carlton include Melbourne Museum.
Melbourne Zoo is situated in the Parkville district. This popular zoo has a good selection of animals, including those that are native to Australia, plus species from around the world too.
The Woodlands Historic Park is an interesting and fun place to visit. Just to the north of Melbourne, this attraction re-creates a homestead from the 1840’s, showing what life was like back then. The park is also a nature reserve.
Melbourne is a popular base for exploring the surrounding area, and there is plenty to do within a short distance of the city too. There is the Yarra Valley which wine drinkers may recognise as being one of the top wine producing areas for Australia. Wine tasting tours are available here. For natural attractions and scenery, the two national parks of the Dandenong Ranges, and Kinglake National Park are within easy reach.
When Should You Visit Melbourne?
Compared to some parts of Australia, Melbourne has a mild climate with relatively high rainfall throughout the year. October is usually the wettest month. Being in the Southern Hemisphere, Melbourne experiences summer in January and February when the daytime high temperature reaches about 26C. This is hot but not so hot as to be uncomfortable!
