Flights to Newcastle

The Newcastle Airport (airport code: NTL) is a regional one that serves domestic and charter airlines for flights around Australia; so all flights to Newcastle from the UK will transfer in another Australian city (usually Brisbane) before continuing on. Qantas Airways stops twice, first in Singapore and then Brisbane. Singapore Airlines takes the same route for their flights to Newcastle. A different route through Dubai and Brisbane is offered by Emirate Airlines. For more options, you could always fly into Sydney, and drive to Newcastle, approximately 2 hours by car.

Newcastle Tourist Attractions

The Hunter Valley region that Newcastle is situated in is a major tourist attraction, attracting visitors not only for short breaks from nearby Sydney, but attracting visitors from all over the world. The valley is famous for many things including wine production, great scenery, the coast, and history, and Newcastle makes an excellent base from which to explore the region further.

Historic Newcastle

Newcastle was established in 1804 and still features some of the original Victorian architecture from that period. There’s a heritage area to the east of the city centre where you can see a good selection of attractive Victorian homes, and it’s centred around the city’s Christ Church Cathedral, situated in The Hill residential suburb of Newcastle. Also on The Hill is the historic Beacon Tower and a convict’s prison block.

Within the Central Business District there are also other historic buildings to look out for, including the former Customs House, the Post Office, and Newcastle Railway Station.

Nobbys Head

Nobbys Head is the name of the island and lighthouse that sits at the entrance to Newcastle Harbour, and is connected to the mainland via a pier that was built by convicts in the 1800’s. You can walk along the pier and enjoy Nobbys Beach on one side, as well as some great harbour views.

Fort Scratchley

Situated in between Nobbys Beach and Newcastle Beach is the historic Fort Sctratchley. This was built in 1882 and used right up until 1972. It has now been restored and is used as a military museum, plus it provides some great city views.

Beaches and Baths

Newcastle is a great place to come and enjoy the beaches, and there are several surrounding the city to enjoy. The waves and wind make this a great place to go surfing and kite surfing, and it’s a very popular place to come for both.

For swimming you can either swim in the ocean or try out Newcastle’s famous ocean baths. These are large open-air swimming pools right on the coast and are open throughout the year.

When Should You Visit Newcastle?

Apart from high rainfall Newcastle is good to visit at any time of the year. It has a humid subtropical climate which means summers (December to March) are hot and humid with average high temperatures of between 24.7C (76F), and 25.5C (8F), though actual high temperatures can be much hotter than this. During the winter it’s still warm enough for sightseeing, with an average high of 16.7C (62F) in July.
