Perth is the biggest city in Western Australia and has one of the biggest populations. Perth was founded in 1829 and to this day serves as a seat for the Government of Western Australia. The City is known for being safe and friendly as well as being a cultural centre; lots of places to eat and relax, bars and beaches etc. Perth even has its own dedicated beach for dogs; maybe not so useful if you have a dog at home but fun nevertheless if you love the animal! Perth is also known as the ‘city of light’ after the residents lit their houselights as astronaut John Glenn passed overhead whilst orbiting the earth in 1962. All in all, Perth is a great alternative to the obvious capital cities that are normally visited in Australia.

Flights

Flying to Perth is easy from the UK although as the flight is long, the flights are never too cheap. You can fly direct or quite often take an indirect flight for less money. Airlines that fly Perth include Qantas, Virgin Blue, Singapore Airlines, British Airways, Tiger Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, Royle Burnei, Thai airways Air Asia, Arrow Air, Tiger Airways, Emirates, Jetstar, Air New Zealand and more. You can fly from the major international airports in the UK, such as Heathrow, Manchester and Birmingham. To get the best prices book early, especially for the summer season. You should have no problems entering the country with a valid passport although Australia does have a strict customs policy with thorough checks.

Climate

Perth has a Mediterranean style climate in that it has very hot and dry summer from late December to late March with February being the hottest, reaching 40 degrees on extremely hot days. However the city has its fair share of rainfall throughout the year, including summer. Sometimes tropical cyclones can occur which brings a lot more rain although this is rare. The coldest temperature recorded was -3 degrees Celsius in 2006 although this is rare; generally the winters are cool and damp, leading to some freeze.

What to do

Perth has plenty of fun things to do if you are visiting. There are lot of museums in the area, for example, the Western Australian museum has a number of Aboriginal artefacts and zoological exhibits. The Western Maritime Museum shows off the history of the city with lots of boating artefacts. AQWA – or The Aquarium of Western Australia has a number of interesting sea exhibits, nice to visit if it’s a rainy day!

Or how about finding a beach? Popular ones are Mullalloo and Yanchep Lagoon; not as crowded as the major beaches in other cities. Remember to take your swimwear but also cover up for getting to and from your hotel.

Finally think about visiting Rottnest Island and going whale watching there. Whilst it’s not cheap to visit the Island it is a stunning beach and if you go during October and December then you can take part in the whale watching.
