Destinations in Australia
On the north eastern coast of Australia, Townsville makes a great starting off point for anyone looking to get out on the water to explore the Great Barrier Reef which is just a short boat ride off the coast. But there are a number of other natural sights in the area around Townsville too.
Flights to Townsville
Though the Townsville Airport (airport code: TSV) doesn't handle international air traffic, many airlines have flights to Townsville that transfer in Australia first. There is a public bus route to the airport, as well as taxis and car rentals. Coming from the UK, if you want to transfer in Singapore and Brisbane, you can take your pick from Qantas Airways, British Airways or Singapore Airlines, as they all have the same route. Virgin Atlantic has a flight to Townsville that connects in Hong Kong and Brisbane instead.
Townsville Tourist Attractions
Bowling Green Bay National Park
South-east of Townsville is one of the many local parks, and it’s the largest one near the city. It's a great park for hiking as it is filled with forests, rocky hills, creeks, swamps and many other landscapes to keep things interesting. There are camping facilities within the park, and you can get there by one of the main highways leading south out of Townsville.
Beaches
Being right on the coast, there are several good beaches near Townsville with Bushland Beach being the most popular one (and the closest). Saunders Beach is a little farther north up the coast, and Balgal Beach is farther up the coast again.
Great Barrier Reef
Of course, you can't ignore the huge natural attraction off the coast. You should have no difficulties chartering a boat or joining a tour group that can take you out and help you find the best locations for snorkelling or scuba diving. The water is very blue and clear, and the coral is home to an assortment of sea creatures so you will always have something amazing to see.
Magnetic Island National Park
Just off the coast of Townsville is Magnetic Island, and there are regular ferries out there from the marina at the north end of town. There are a few small villages on the island but it is mostly made up of the Magnetic Island National Park. There are sandy beaches, forests, and rocky hillsides through the park and lots of wildlife to see. Marked trails are good for walking and there are several maintained areas for picnic.
Museum of Tropical Queensland
Much of the Museum of Tropical Queensland focuses on the collection of relics from the HMS Pandora shipwrecks though there are items from all points in regional history. Also within the museum complex is the Reef HQ Aquarium, where there large aquariums hold many specimens of local coral and fish. Along with the fish are many starfish, sponges and other interesting sea life.
When Should You Visit Townsville?
Townsville is a warm place to visit all year long, though their winters are more comfortable than their summers. December through March will be just above 30C (86F), and the rain will be highest in February. You would be better to plan your visit in June, July or August when it is only 25C (77F) and there is virtually no rain.
