Anguilla is a Caribbean island, situated in the Lesser Antilles. This small nation is a British Overseas Territory which was inhabited by English settlers from Saint Kitts in 1650. This gives visitors to the island the benefit of enjoying English as the first language of Anguilla, plus a number of other British quirks, such as driving on the left!

Flights to Anguilla’s Wallblake airport (airport code: AXA) from the UK are indirect. Travellers will need to take at least two connecting flights, with the second via one of the following small islands: St. Maarten Juliana, San Juan or St. Thomas Island. Flights to Anguilla from the UK are offered by Air France, Continental Airlines, American Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, US Airways, and United Airlines departing from London.

The Tourist Attractions of Anguilla

Although Anguilla has been inhabited by English settlers for over 300 years it is only recently becoming appreciated as a tourist destination. As demands and preferences for holiday destinations change, many visitors are looking for new and different experiences and Anguilla, though typically a Caribbean beach holiday destination, can give visitors a quieter and more relaxed holiday than many other popular Caribbean islands.

Anguilla is just 35 square miles, measuring 16 miles long and just 3 miles wide at its widest point. Visitors will need to appreciate that, being a small island, there is not a great deal to do here – the scenic beauty, the weather and the beaches are the main attractions!

There is a good selection of accommodation on Anguilla, ranging from moderately priced to expensive hotels, clubs and villas in addition to a variety of places to eat; seafood is a popular choice!

The capital ‘city’ of Aguilla is called The Valley and has a population of less than 1,200. It’s an attractive place to visit though, especially its Historic District. Buildings, some colonial, include Wallblake House, Miss Marjorie Hodge’s Homestead, the Warden’s Place and the ruins of the Old Court House which are on Crocus Hill. Crocus Hill is the highest point on Anguilla, though this isn’t anything to get excited about at just 65 metres high!

The whole of Anguilla is low-lying and the island is made of limestone. This has resulted in the natural production of many caves around the island, though the two most impressive are The Big Springs, which is in Island Harbour, and The Fountain in Shoal Bay.

Anguilla’s coral reefs provide a beautiful and marine-rich environment for visitors who like to snorkel. Other water-based attractions include Dolphin Discovery where you can swim with dolphins!

Of course there are a number of beaches on Anguilla for those who prefer to relax on the white sand and swim in the beautiful blue waters. The main harbour is Sandy Ground which has a long sweeping beach, though as this is the point where ships come and go this probably isn’t the best spot on the island for swimming.

When Should You Visit Anguilla?

The climate in Anguilla is classified as being tropical which means there is very little variation in the temperatures across the year. Rainfall is low here, though the months with the most rainfall are September and October. Between June and November (though the peak being August to mid October) Anguilla lies within the common path of hurricanes. Taking all of this into account, Anguilla is probably best as a winter and spring destination – the average high temperature in December is a warm 27C (80F).
