The Tourist Attractions of Barbuda

Most visitors to this nation will go to Antigua because, although this is changing, Barbuda is far less developed in terms of both its general infrastructure and its tourist infrastructure. This means that Barbuda may not be appropriate for all visitors, but visitors looking for a more authentic and quiet Caribbean holiday may find Barbuda to be the perfect choice!

Barbuda has a population of only around 1500 people, the vast majority or whom live in the capital, Codrington. There are a few things to see and explore but mainly Barbuda would appeal to visitors who want to relax and do nothing much!

Codrington was founded and named after two brothers, Christopher and John Codrington who were granted a lease on the island of Barbuda in the mid to late 1600’s. They used the land for agriculture and had slaves working for them. You can visit the ruins of the Codrington’s house, called Highland House, which was their 18th century home.

Other things to see include the Frigate Bird Sanctuary. This is an important nesting and mating ground for these interesting birds, which are related to the pelican family and for bird lovers in particular, this is probably Barbuda’s top attraction.

About 7 miles from Codrington is a Martello Tower. This is the name of a specific kind of small and fortified tower built by the British Empire during the 19th century. This particular one on Barbuda is attached to a pre-existing fort which is thought to have been built by the Spanish.

The final interesting attraction on Barbuda is a cave, called Indian Cave. This actually contains ancient Amerindian petroglyphs – carvings into the rock.

Being the only town on Barbuda, Codrington is the only choice if you want to eat out and there are a couple of restaurants here to choose from. Codrington also has accommodation, plus there are a few other options for accommodation on the island. As previously mentioned the main attraction with Barbuda is the peace and quiet, and you’ll find miles upon miles of near deserted beaches to enjoy all to yourself!

When Should You Visit Barbuda?

Barbuda has a great tropical climate which has very little variation in temperatures across the year. January and February are the coolest months but don’t let this concern you as the average high temperature is 27C (81F). The hottest months are July and August, though the temperature here is only a few degrees hotter, averaging at a high of 30C (86F)! Winter is usually a very good time to visit as the island is less likely to be at risk of hurricanes at this time, which are most common in late summer and autumn.
