Places in Antigua
Antigua is the main island of the Caribbean country of Antigua and Barbuda, situated in the West Indies in the chain of islands known as the Leeward Islands. Having gained independence from the UK in 1981 British visitors will find a friendly welcome and easy to communicate as the official language is English. Antigua’s population has a mixed background though – some are of British descent though there are also West African and Portuguese descendents too.
Flights to Antigua (airport code: ANU) from the UK are offered through a variety of the world’s major airlines. Choose from direct flights or indirect flights which have at least one stop-over. Virgin Atlantic Airways and British Airways provide direct and indirect flights from London. BWIA West Indies Airways, Air France, American Airlines, Condor, and Continental Airways all provide flights to Antigua with at least one connection.
The Tourist Attractions of Antigua
Antigua is a well known Caribbean destination most popular for its great beaches, rocky coasts and nice waters. It is marketed as a ‘luxury Caribbean escape’ because it aims to provide upscale tourism in the main.
Saint John’s
Saint John’s is the only city on Antigua and it also happens to be the capital city. It’s a popular stop for the cruise ships so you may want to try to avoid the city on a day when a cruise ship comes in because it will be far busier than usual!
Saint John’s is best loved by tourists for its vibrant nightlife. There are numerous clubs here as well as restaurants and bars serving some of the great local cuisine plus some gambling opportunities too.
Falmouth
The town of Falmouth was the original British settlement on Antigua and the main attractions here now are the forts which were built by the British in the 1800’s to defend against attacks on the island. The views from Monks Hill, where one of the forty forts is situated, are wonderful.
English Harbour
Also in southern Antigua is the town of English Harbour. The town and harbour are best known for Nelson’s Dockyard, part of the Nelson’s Dockyard National Park. The dockyard was used by the Royal Navy in the 18th and 19th centuries and features restored buildings, ruined forts and more. Overlooking English Harbour is Shirley Heights from which you get fantastic views of the town, harbour and Falmouth Harbour, and on Sunday evenings there’s a party up here at the old fort with a barbecue and Antiguan music to dance to while watching the sunset. Both English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour are deepwater, sheltered harbours making them a great place for boating, especially sailing.
West Coast
The West Coast of Antigua is also well sheltered and visitors will find some beautiful beaches here perfect for sunbathing, swimming and water sports because the waters are so calm. Also because of the calm waters this is a great spot for a family holiday.
When Should You Visit Antigua?
Antigua has a tropical marine climate. This means there is very little variation to the temperature across the year, guaranteeing visitors many hot days! However, this doesn’t mean Antigua is the ideal island to visit at any time of the year as this part of the Caribbean is often subjected to hurricanes. The most common time for hurricanes is late summer and autumn, so Antigua may be best avoided during these times.
