Places in Aruba
The Caribbean island of Aruba is in the Lesser Antilles in the South Caribbean Sea. It is an autonomous dependency of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and as such Dutch is the first official language though English is also widely spoken and understood.
Flights to Aruba from the UK are welcomed in the Reina (Queen) Beatrix International Airport (airport code: AUA) on the western side of the island. Your flight to Aruba from the UK will be indirect with one or two connections. Choose from airlines such as KLM, Continental, Virgin Atlantic Airways, American Airlines, and Delta Air Lines which offer one stop flights to Aruba from the UK. Flight routes differ according to the airlines but most fly via their home countries.
The Tourist Attractions of Aruba
Aruba is best known for being a relaxing Caribbean holiday destination. It has lovely white sandy beaches and a tropical climate and being outside of the hurricane belt it means Aruba should be safe to visit all year round. In comparison to some tropical islands Aruba has really quite a lot to see and do if you’re looking for a holiday with a few attractions other than lying on a beach all day!
Oranjestad
The capital and largest city of Aruba is Oranjestad. This is an attractive town and certainly worth a day visit to admire its ornate architecture and watch the cruise ships come and go.
Natural Bridges
One feature which Aruba is famous for is its natural bridges. There are seven of these altogether, though the biggest and best one, at Boca Andicuri, unfortunately collapsed in 2005. Still the remaining ones are impressive including a smaller twin of the one which collapsed.
The Haystack
Haystack Mountain (Hooiberg) is a 500 feet + mountain in the middle of Aruba and a popular hiking trip because the views from the top are amazing. You don’t need to be ultra fit to climb the mountain but some visitors may struggle with the 1000 or so ‘steps’ which take you to the top. But if you can make it on a clear day you can see Venezuela.
Arikok National Park
Taking up about 18% of Aruba is Arikok National Park. This is most popular for hiking and wildlife spotting though visitors can also see ruined plantations and varied landscapes and explore caves. There are three caves within the national park – Guadirikiri Cave, Fontein Cave and The Huliba Cave.
Beaches on Aruba
Obviously there are many beaches on Aruba though one of the best known is Baby Beach. It’s called this because the waters of this man-made lagoon are very sheltered and therefore safe for young children. Snorkelling for beginners is popular here though if you’re a serious snorkeller or diver you should try some other sites.
Diving Around Aruba
One of the most popular dive sites is just off Malmok Beach. There is a sunken German cargo ship, great for diving around. Diving off Arashi Beach is also popular.
When Should You Visit Aruba?
Aruba has a tropical marine climate and experiences little change in the temperature throughout the year, with a fairly constant 27C (81F). This combined with the fact that it is outside the hurricane zone, makes Aruba a great destination at any time of the year.
