Flights to Freeport
Places in the Bahamas
Freeport is the second largest city in the Bahamas (after the capital, Nassau), and is situated on the island of Grand Bahama. It’s the closest city in the Bahamas to Florida, at just 100 miles off the coast of Fort Lauderdale.
Freeport welcomes flights from the UK in the Freeport Airport (airport code: FPO). Travellers will need to take indirect flights to Freeport from the UK. Continental Airlines, American Airlines and Virgin Atlantic Airways offer travellers one stop flights to Freeport from the UK via Miami. Other airlines such as Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and Air Canada provide two stop flights to Freeport from the UK. These airlines have varying flight routes.
The Tourist Attractions of Freeport
Compared to many Caribbean cities, Freeport is very young as it was established in just 1955. As its name suggests, Freeport is a free trade zone and was founded by a Virginian financier named Wallace Groves.
Groves had a lumber interest on the island of Grand Bahama and was granted a large area of land by the Bahamian government. This was on the proviso that he developed the area so that Grand Bahama would benefit economically, and so the city of Freeport was built.
Freeport harbour is very important for the island because it can handle such large ships. Cruise ships come and go almost daily, and Freeport received about a million visitors per year, whether they’re coming on cruise ships or on flights.
Because Freeport is a newer city, tourists won’t find much of the history and colonial architecture which other Caribbean cities are famous for. However, Freeport is a bustling and friendly city with a variety of things to see and do. Shopping here is popular and venues include the International Bazaar in downtown Freeport, as well as the Port Lucaya Marketplace in the suburb of Lucaya.
Lucaya is actually where most visitors to the island will stay. This is a seaside suburb which has been developed with hotels and resorts, and there are of course plenty of beaches to enjoy here! As well as the beaches, Port Lucaya is a great destination from which to go scuba diving. UNEXSO is probably the best known diving charter business, and in addition to going diving with them you can visit their dolphinarium or go shark feeding!
As would be expected with a popular tourist destination, as well as plenty of shopping, the Port Lucaya area has plenty of restaurants and places to eat. You’ll find more traditional Bahamian cuisine here as well as all sorts of international dishes too. Seafood features very highly in the local cuisine and is usually of excellent quality. Poultry and pork are the other ‘meats’ mainly used here. You’ll find that spices are quite heavily used in Bahamian cuisine. If this isn’t your thing there are many other places to choose from, including an Irish pub, Greek, Italian, Asian and more.
When Should You Visit Freeport?
Freeport has a sub tropical to tropical climate which is moderated by the Gulf Stream. Despite giving the city warm weather all year round, Freeport can also be prone to hurricanes. Hurricane Frances in 2004 was the last one to do major damage to the city, but the 2005 Hurricane Wilma was also bad, and 2008’s Fay dropped a tremendous amount of rain on the city. So make sure you don’t visit during hurricane season!
