The Tourist Attractions of Bridgetown

Bridgetown is a vibrant port city with many great shops, restaurants and bars to enjoy by day or night. For visitors who are staying elsewhere in Barbados, Bridgetown certainly makes a great destination for a day trip or two, or for some enjoyable evenings of entertainment and great cuisine.

Careenage is one such popular place where you can spend days or nights. This is one of the older parts of town and includes a small canal. Now the buildings which used to be warehouses have been converted into trendy restaurants, bars and boutique stores. This is a great place to spend a few hours sipping some of the locally produced rum, and people watching. When you’ve relaxed to your heart’s content you can take a short ride on one of the pleasure cruises, or set out on a fishing trip!

Bridgetown has a good selection of historical colonial buildings. Barbados was a British colony for a long time, and though the country gained independence back in 1966 many aspects still remain quite British! There’s the Kensington Oval, for example, where the popular sport of cricket is played. Even if you’re not a cricket fan, you shouldn’t pass the chance to experience the excitement and liveliness of a cricket match if one is being played whilst you’re here!

The Parliament Building, though not anywhere near as impressive at the British parliament building, is attractive and is open at times for tours. This is situated near to Trafalgar Square, though since 1999 this square has been officially known as National Heroes Square, and it’s here that you’ll find a bronze statue of Admiral Lord Nelson.

A couple of miles outside Bridgetown is the Garrison Historic Area. This area includes several important historical buildings from the colonial days of Barbados, such as barracks, as this was the base of the British West Indies Regiment. The area has just recently been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Visitors who are interested in learning more about the history of Barbados can visit the Barbados Museum. This is located on the edge of the Garrison race course, just outside Bridgetown, and is housed in the former British Military Prison.

When Should You Visit Bridgetown?

The tropical climate of Bridgetown, and indeed the rest of the island of Barbados, means visitors will experience warm to hot temperatures throughout the year. Bridgetown is just outside the main hurricane zone though can occasionally be hit by hurricanes which travel further east than their usual path. The rainy season in Bridgetown is between June and October/November, making the dry season, December to May, a better time to visit.
