Barbados is an independent nation situated just east of the Caribbean Sea, though still considered to be a Caribbean island. Although Barbados gained independence from Britain back in 1966 the island still has many signs of British colonialism – English is the official language, for example, and its nickname is Little England!

Sir Grantley Adams International Airport (airport code: BGI) is where international flights to Barbados land. Travellers can choose from a variety of airlines that offer direct or indirect flights to Barbados from the UK. Airlines such as BWIA West Indies Airways, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic Airways offer direct flights to Barbados, whilst airlines such as Delta Air Lines, Air France and Kuwait Airlines offer two stop flights to Barbados from the UK.

The Tourist Attractions of Barbados

Barbados is a popular location for a relaxing beach holiday with plenty of great beaches and typical Caribbean coastal scenery, but those visitors who wish to do a little more than relaxing on a beach will also find an assortment of other attractions here too.

Bridgetown

Bridgetown is the capital of Barbados and the only city on the island. It’s often full of cruise ship passengers as this is a popular cruise ship stop. It’s an attractive city with a variety of colonial buildings to see. Attractions include Barbados Museum, the Parliament Building, St Mary’s Church and the popular Careenage area with bars, restaurants, shops and more.

Harrison’s Cave

Harrison’s Cave is the top tourist attraction in Barbados. Visitors can tour the caves on a tram which travels slowly through them, stopping at certain points of particular interest so that visitors can get off and take photos.

Gun Hill Signal Station

The largest military outpost in Barbados is Gun Hill Signal Station. This was used to pass military signals between points on the island. The station fell into disrepair but since 1981 has been leased by the Barbados National Trust and restored. This is also a great spot for views of the western side of the island.

Francia Great House

Near Gun Hill is Francia House. This is a very smart historical plantation ‘great house’ with lovely gardens, and is now privately owned and run as the Providence Elementary School.

Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary

Another popular tourist destination in Barbados is the Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary. Here you will see a mangrove swamp plus other plants, fish and bird life, including captive birds such as flamingos, parrots and more.

Andromeda Gardens

Also popular is Andromeda Gardens. This is a botanical garden featuring many beautiful species of plants, flowers and trees, as well as a pond and visitor facilities.

When Should You Visit Barbados?

Barbados has a nice tropical climate and has the benefit of being situated just outside the main hurricane zone. This means that although hurricanes can hit the island, it happens only rarely.

There are two seasons to the climate in Barbados – rainy and dry. From June to October or November is the wet season. These months experience heavy rainfall, so are not ideal for visitors looking for a sunny beach holiday! The dry season, from December to May, makes a far better time to visit Barbados.
